What Was Your First Bass Guitar ?

What was your first Bass Guitar ? In 1974, my first bass guitar was a Kay.... The strings were about an inch above the fret board. My parents said I would have to buy the next one. Once I learned to play, it wasn't long before I was out doing anything I could to make a few bucks..... Picking up returnable Coke bottles, mowing grass for 3.00 per lawn and checking pay phones for change......... I was not playing this Kay Bass much longer.

First bass was a 68-69 Kent, hollow body, Beatle bass sorta look-a-like thing. Here's a pic I found, not mine:

Played it for about a year. Then I bought this:

memphis p + j with no PG, it was metallic blue. Bought it from a "friend", had if for some 2 weeks before he borrowed it and I never saw the bass again. Ever. Some 5 months later, the guys shows up with a "gremlin" (p copy, no pg either) and says that I can keep that one while he finds me my blue bass.

Did I ever see the guy again?? nope. I pawned the gremlin for like 80 bucks, and got me my first used fender for 489 bucks, which i consider my real first bass.

In 1985 I purchased a brand new Peavey Fury for around $275, money earned doing newspapers and mowing lawns, etc.

I miss nothing about it; the feel and tone were awful, but it was better than trying to work out bass lines on my friend’s brother’s toy 6 string.

My next bass was a 4003 Rickenbacker, and things changed after that. And then a fretless Pedulla, and then a...

Epiphone Allen Woody Rumblekat. Great looking semi-hollow short scale - easy to play, light. Wallowy dull tone.

84 MIJ Fender Precision. It was brown sunburst with a white pickguard and pickup, and a maple fretboard. I bought it used in 1989 with some dings and scratches, but it played like a masterpiece and was tough as a tank. I had to sell it several years ago to pay bills, and I dearly miss it.

A 1978 Fender Musicmaster short-scale bass. Black with b/w/b pickguard and a rosewood fingerboard. Really quite nice; I think I paid $125.00 for it in 1983 or 1984. I was thirteen at the time.

My first bass was a cheap Silvertone Jazz bass. It was okay for the money, but nothing like the P bass I got after it.

That's what mine looked like except it was black. Randy Jackson bought it, don't know if he still has it.
