My rhythm guitarist had this little beauty sitting in a corner collecting dust, so I decided to check it out. WOW. Within a couple minutes of tweaking it, I was sold.
It's a very basic stompbox, with just two control knobs: Lo Contour and Process. These basically control +12dB boost at 50Hz and 10kHz, respectively. But the "sonic maximizer" effect is working as soon as you step on the button and see the green LED come on.
I was pretty much using the pedal exclusively with my ME-50B's distortion, so I can't really say what kind of effect it has on a clean tone. For the little bit I was messing with it on a clean (ie undistorted) setting, it seemed to tighten everything up. The Lo Contour provided a really fat bottom end boost, and the Process made the highs (especially harmonics) come out more clearly.
But with some distortion, I was blown away. The high strings on my bass (which is tuned B F# D E) came to life with a new brightness I don't think I've heard out of a bass. My rhythm guitarist commented that they "sounded like a guitar." It's true...and now I'm finding myself playing a lot more in the higher register, just to hear that sweet sound.
Overall, I'm really impressed. I'm able to crank the volume up on my Firebass 700 even more than I usually do, and with less clipping. I guess the sonic maximer action is adding some compression/limiting to keep everything in check. I wish I had found this little gem a few months earlier, so I could have used it at my last studio session!
EDIT: I've now been using the pedal sans any other effects (no more distortion). I still love it! Even clean, I'm still getting insanely crystal clear highs, and the low end is very deep and tight. I think the only way I'd remove this pedal from my rig is if I went to a preamp/poweramp setup that included a BBE preamp!

great pedal that is built like a tank. i dont think i even have scratches on it. the simple knobs that can be used by anyone.
a lil is enough, does wonders to your low end. but don't dial in too much (for me, too much may be past the 10-11 o'clock?) cause you would get lost in the mix.
very highly recommended.
some say it adds a blanket of tone over ur tone, some say its a simplified eq, some say its a scooped mid ( i mean, u r technicall boosting ur low n high frequencies if u have the knobs way up, duh). i've lost sense trying to tell ppl what it does at times, it enhances my sound. and that works for me.

Many moons ago I used the rack mount version of this pedal and loved it! After a 10-year break from playing and completely out of the pass player loop. I started playing agin and went right back to some of the old gear I once used. Just flipping through bass player mag I saw the add for BBE the Sonic Stomp. And with-in minutes I was at my local dealer to snatch one up! It is what it is! And it does wonders for my tone. I love it!
But like the other poster says, be careful it can muddy up your sound if you drive it too hard. I keep the low contour and the high contour knobs set at 12 o’clock. And maybe bump up the low if it’s a huge room.
It’s a love hat thing with this pedal. Some people I talk to hate it and ask “why do you use that thing?” some people look at it and smile because they know!
Cheers!

I too got mine from my guitarist. Weird right?
This can really add some dimensionality to your sound. Has the ability to make bass WAY too boomy and WAY too trebly at the same time...just be careful.

i have been wanting to get this pedal for a while, so i saw it on amazon for $58.00 dollars brand new, so i took that print out to guitar center, and they do price matching, so instead of paying $99.00 plus tax, i payed only $52.00, man what a steal!, from now on before i buy anything from guitar center, i will look for the cheapest price i can find on the internet and make guitar center price match it.
So i plugged my G&L L2500 bass into it, then to my Swr 750 watt head and goliath 3 speaker, man!, when i had it on i could not tell if it was on or not, but when i turned the pedal off, my bass sounded dull, anyway i noticed my high strings sound clearer and smoother, and my low strings had more punch, thickness and smoothness, i love this thing, it took a good sounding bass and made it sound even better, i will never go without this thing again, i am not sure on how it works, but all i know is that it took my tone to another level, buy it people!, you will never regret it.

Clears up tone in a way you have to hear to believe

Ships with a crappy generic power supply that hums like a lawnmower

The BBE Sonic Stomp is a marvel. What it does is realign phase discrepancies across various frequencies so they come out of a speaker properly.
The idea is this: speakers cannot translate electrical signals to sound perfectly. The rate at which the upper and lower harmonics of a tone are produced by a speaker is uneven, so any sound coming out of any speaker is to some degree unclear.
The BBE Sonic Maximizer fixes this problem. And it's really impossible to describe the difference in sound aside from saying that everything is much clearer through this pedal.
The controls are simple. Lo Contour acts as a bass boost, but what it's really doing is controlling the amount of phase-corrected low frequencies. Process controls the amount of phase correction, which is perceived as an increase in highs.
Like any type of EQ, your preamp/amplifer/speakers need to be able to handle the gain and frequency ranges properly. However, using an SVT-PRO into an SVT 810, and also with a Little Mark II into a 102HF I could get a huge increase in CLEAR lows by increasing the Lo Contour. Only at around 3:00 would it start to be too much.
The Process knob does add a bit of noise past about 11:30. The noise becomes unbearable past 2:00 or so. However, there is little perceptible difference in the sound of my instrument past that point anyway.
The casing is good and solid. Seems to be true bypass. The knobs seem sturdy, although, one of them is a little bit stiff. My only real complaint is that the power supply that ships with the pedal is a piece of garbage. I find it odd how a company that designs a product to enhance the clarity of ones bass tone would bother to even include a power supply that adds hum. I'd rather no power supply at all than this one. I've tried using my PowerAll and it's dead quiet. They do include also one "eco-friendly" 9V battery, so that kindof makes up for the poor DC
I keep mine set to about 11:00 on the Lo Contour and 11:30 on the Process knobs for all playing.
Some interesting notes: playing by myself, the change in clarity is audible. Playing with a band, the change in clarity is drastic! I need to use about 20% less volume now in order to be heard.
Using a fuzz pedal (I use an Electro-Harmonix Russian Big Muff) the higher harmonics are more audible using the Sonic Stomp, so I've had to dial back the tone on the fuzz a little bit.
My setup is: bass (usually a passive Fender Jazz), effects, Sonic Stomp, Aguilar Tone Hammer, MarkBass Little Mark II, MarkBass 102HF.

Cons:

None, really, just dont crank it with the wrong lo settings

I found this pedal as a guitarist, and used it with a JCM SLASH.
In the guitar effects chain it was underwhelming, but in the (serial) effects loop, it was magical and I couldn't/wouldn't play the amp without it. The amp ever seemed lifeless without it.
I now play bass (like a bass player, thank you) and just got a SVT4. I have been eyeballing this pedal, and now I am going to check it out, but will try it in the effects loop first. Post-preamp makes the most sense for its use, unless using it as a boost for solos (like a treble booster).

bring your bass back to life after all those pedals...

Cons:

Not much to say that hasnt allready been said on this one. This is a great box to bring some life back to your signal in jsut about any application. I think the effect is best noticed in a band setting or playing along with another group. It really brings your insturment to the foreground of the mix, really allows it to be heard. Solo'd its not as noticable...sounds kind of like a wimpy eq all buy itself really...add a little bass and some high treble. But what it really does is bring the all presence and fullness of your signal to the initial transcient.
This is a great box just about anyone could benefit from. And for $70 shipped off amazon, just stellar results for the price. Just dont crank the controls up too high...youll get some noise and harshness from the process and unsusably subbyness to the low end...but in moderation this baby shines. Definately recommend this to anybody.

So far I put this after my MXR M87 Bass Compressor (which also is FANTASIC), to sort of bring a little umph back to the mix. As the compressor at times will do its job a little TOO WELL. This Stomp box.. kills it.. brings everything right back, but in a much more subtle way. So far its now on my list of things to buy!
