They say in the product literature that this is the classic SWR pre-amp, and I tend to agree. It has a single 12AX7 with the SWR "aural enhancer." Its sound reminds me of a SWR Basic Black.
Using the eq section, I was able to get what I was looking for out of this amp. Set flat--with the aural enhancer off--it took on a clear voice which I appreciated. Still to my ear it had a slight bass boost to the tone, but I it made me happy. I've used this on rock gigs, but primarily with a blues band.
I tested this amp with an Acme B2 2x10", Ampeg SVT-410HLF, 2 Bag End 1x15" cabs, and a Sadowsky SA410. In my tests, I found the amp to be softer volume wise than other amps of comparative power. Not a drastic amount, but its there. I would make sure to test this amp with the cab you are intending to use it with to make sure you are satisfied with the volume.
There has been a lot written about the downfall of quality in SWR equipment, but this amp has been trucking along for over a year with no problems.

I bought the SWR 550X used on EBay two years ago, and installed it in an SKB portable rack along with an SWR RUN2N tuner . It has been a solid performer, never an issue. I typically dial it in with the aural enhancer engaged mid way, and "put a smile" on the three band EQ - higher bass and treble, small cut to mid range. Lots of variations are possible within that, but that's the basic set up.
I use this with a Peavey TX410 (what a great cab!), and occasionally add a Carvin 115 cab if I need more low end. It pushes one or both just fine. I have had zero problems with this unit.
I play classic rock in a cover band.
