Awesome neck, great feel and playability, good balance
uneven string sound (progression not volume) EMG's sound dead
Let me just say first off it you like the way EMG's sound i would rate this bass a 7/10.
It plays great! I have an Ibanez SR900 and a Warwick Corvette $$ and i prefer the feel and playability of the ESP. It definitely is more traditional feeling and with a good setup it plays like butter. If it sounded as well as it played then i wouldn't even consider buying another bass.
I have 5 years playing experience and like a clean tone through my Eden NC320 combo. I do however like there to be a clean deep sounding low end which this bass delivers more than my SR900 and alot less than the Warwick. My one huge issue with this bass though lies somewhere in the electronics.
No matter how you string this thing (or what with) it sounds uneven. Not in terms of output but in terms of tone. I've strung it both EADG & BEAD with multiple brands of strings and the lowest string ( be it B or E) is very low and deep sounding. The next string (be it E or A) has no low end and hardly any lower mids no matter how you EQ the bass. it just sounds wrong. The rest of the strings will sound very trebley and while you can appreciated the clarity i just cant live with such an uneven progression of tone.
For this reason and this reason alone this bass does not get the playing time it should. It does cut through well and people seem to love it on stage due to the matt finish however unless your getting buried by 2 guitarists playing in your frequency area i could not reccomend the bass unless you like the sound of EMG's.
In regards to construction, build and finish it is immaculate. Nothing feels flimsy or breakable, the finish was perfect as was the frets. The 35 inch scale does help tighten up the feel or the bass if you like to detune.
All in all i really want to love this bass but being a limited edition (only 500 or so were built however the B500 which looked the same minus the inlay was in production in 2005/6 also) i dont want to change the PU's or preamp.
