First a personal note:
This instrument saved me from switching to electric guitar.
I was actually in the music store (many years ago) to look around for a guitar, but then I spotted the Yamaha RBX260F. I tried it out, and was immediatly sold. I never touched a fretted bass again or thought about a guitar.
So from that personal experience you can already conclude that this is an ideal bass for someone who wants to start learning fretless.
The thin neck is very easy on your left hand. With very much ease you can quickly re-adjust the pitch of a note while you are playing.
So all the fun of playing fretless in a easy to handle and affordable bass.
The rounwound strings give you the possibility to make you sound as if you are playing a fretted bass. You choose yourself when you want to express your vibrato and sliding techniques. (I will not go into the issue of roundwounds on a fretless fingerboard. This has been discussed enough.)
I prefer the single P-style pick up. It delivers the purest sound that I personally look for.
That's why I don't want the updated 270 version: the 270 has an additional J-pickup at the neck, wich I don't need and don't care for personally.
I use this bass mainly for metal, and for that genre this is a very suitable fretless bass. Sounding heavy due to the roundwounds, incredible traditional electric tone from a traditional P-style pickup, slim neck and 34" scale allows for fast melodic actions in the more progressive metal.
I haven't had any experience with other genres. Except I'm getting in to jazz. And I can't use my RBX because it is incapable of delivering warm sounds.
I have a Fender Jazz Bass for that kind of thing, but I have a kind of love/hate relationship with Jazz basses. But that's another story.
The Yamaha RBX260F I will never get rid off, never get tired off.
It is amazing for what it is.
