Pros: Great clear sound, lots of sustain, great pickups
Cons: Heavy, frets wear easily, poor constructed electronics

This was my first "good" bass, and it is currently my main bass. It has a very clear sound and looks beautiful (aged cherry sunburt w/ maple neck). The ash body, though heavy, is very hard to scratch, and feels solid. The tuners are great, and they just about never go out of tune, it is actually quite amazing how long they stay in-tune. The bass also has a lot of sustain, almost too much, showing lots of finger noise if not properly eq'd.

The pickups are also a charm, and they sound so good that I prefer to leave them balanced between eachother rather than favoring one or the other. The active eq works great, but the original soldering job from fender was not very good, so my mid pot went out in 3 months. Though this is an easy, cheap fix, it is not something that should occur out of a bass over a grand. The frets also sound good, not too clacky but good enough to cut through, but they wear fairly easily.

Lastly, fender sends these with a free hardshell case, strap, strap-locks, a cable, and some of meguiar's cleaning equipment samples. All of this stuff works great, though I prefer a thicker strap, so I got the Fender Neoprene bass strap, which helps balance the ash body's weight much better.

Overall, I would reccomend this bass to anyone looking in this price range, but I think you may be able to do better by shoping around a bit more as well.

Pros: Balance, looks, sound, 22 frets, contoured heel, character
Cons: Sustain could be better, but not bad

Mine is a 2003 aged Cherryburst w/ rosewood fingerboard. This is the bass I keep coming back to in my collection. It balances on a strap great and does not seem overly heavy w/its compact body. I tried a j-retro preamp in it for a while but had my tech put the fender original back in. I like the fender jazz growl more w/ the fender preamp. Have owned other jazz basses and this is a keeper. My problem with fenders in the past has been the infamous dead spot at about the 5th fret, g string. I get called to play Big Band Dance music a lot and that spot can be a nuisance. There is NO dead spot in this bass but it could use a little more sustain imo. That's not to say fenders don't have sustain, just this one I own. I'm spoiled, I admit, w/ a half dozen basses to choose from. The sound is very flexible and can be varied quite a bit from slap to thunk. I prefer low volume practise in my home at 2:am on and get a good solid fender jazz sound w/o waking my wife. As I mentioned, this is the bass I most always play, if it had the sustain of my Yamaha TRB5 mk1 (which rings like a bell) it would be a 10.
