Pros: Killer tone, killer looks
Cons: Playability

1976 Rick 4001, Walnut color. Bought it because of Geddy Lee, Paul D'amour sounds, which it produces and then some. Make no mistake- this is not a one trick pony, although the classic "Ric" sound with all knobs cranked is my favorite from this guitar. I sold it because, for a few reasons, I never fell in love with this bass. Upon reflection, I think it just didn't ever feel good in my hands. The scale is shorter, which I just didn't like. The binding makes it look cool, but made my right forearm sore from repeatedly rubbing against it (even ended up with a bruise from it the last time I played it). Also, no real good place to rest my thumb when playing fingerstyle. By the way, I took the bridge pickup cover off, and that makes a big difference in terms of playability, but not enough to make me keep it.

Overall, Rics are great instruments for the right players. The 4001 is easily the most aggressive sounding passive bass I've ever played. In the end, just wasn't for me.

Pros: All
Cons: I can't find any wrong detail...

Maybe one of the most difficult basses to acquire in South America, but if you decide to search until you find it, you will be rewarded for all your efforts.

Got mine through a very good dealer on US. Brand new Rickenbacker 4003 Jetglo out of factory on may of 2009 (following the serial nș) and delivered in Chile on July 10th.

This bass is nothing but perfect for playing almost anything. Its sound is way beyond what you hope before playing it. Finish is perfect, with absolutely no details. All the hardware is remarkable (specially the Schaller's machine heads made for Rickenbacker). The vol/tone control for each pickup allow setting it from fat, warm bass end (very similar to Fender JB's) to very ringing, punchy growl. The pickup selector allow you to pass instantly from nice "slap" punch to very agressive growl, and all the steps that you can get with two tone controls. In addition to this wide-range controls, 4003 ricks made after 2006 include a push-pull tone pot that delivers a complete new floor of sound settings by recovering the classic vintage 4001 sound. If this controls for the sound are not enough, Rickenbacker 4003 bass includes a mono and a extra stereo output that allow sending the signal of each pickup into two different amplifiers, adding an extra level of sound control (works excelent by setting the bridge pickup into the lowest sets and the neck pickup very ringing in another amp). Very low action gives a very sensitive option for easy slapping without effort (only requires some adaptation of the player to the shape of the bass).

summarizing, this is a sonic beast with impressive control range that will support you in home and in stage without the need of any backup bass, according to its remarkable building and hardware. Maybe I will have other basses in the future, but surely this will be my leading stage partner. This is a 10 of 10.
