Description: Split-coil, exposed-polepiece, humbucker aftermarket pickup designed to fit the original Fender Jazz Bass, which has neck and bridge pickup cavities of two different sizes. Some current basses use the same length pickup in both positions. The Ultra Jazz™ set, DP149, consists of two pickups of different lengths, with the neck pickup shorter than the bridge pickup. The pickups are also available individually as DP147 (short) and DP148 (long) if your bass requires either one size pickup or the other.

The appearance of the Ultra Jazz™ is traditional, but the wide dynamic range and frequency response of the hybrid magnetic structure allows both vintage and modern sounds. As with the DiMarzio Model J™, hum canceling is achieved with each coil sensing a pair of strings, rather than a stacked design; even with a relatively high DC resistance figure, the Ultra Jazz™ has very strong, percussive highs and clean lows.

Specs:

Wiring: Standard four conductor
Magnet: Alnico 5 and Ceramic
Output: 250 mV
DC Resistance: 12.30K
Year of introduction 1996

Pros: Great deep modern "active" sound
Cons: Not for those who dislike "scoop"

I've had these in a couple of different Jazz basses.

I find these pickups to have real refined sound, in the good and bad senses of the word. They don't seem to be particularly aggressive - probably not the best choice to cut through a dense mix like a hot knife through butter.

They're certainly not wimpy, though! I like a nice, deep, subtly commanding presence and I feel these deliver on that. They also have a nice sheen on the highs, so much so that a preamp seems redundant. These pickups have yielded the sweetest "scooped" slap sound out of any bass I've ever used, active or passive.

IME there's less variation available - these P/Us tend to sound like you've got both dialed in, even when you run just one. It still has that "scooped" quality - it's harder to lose that and dial in more rawness.

So just like everything else, this model has its strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes I'm completely hooked on its seductive brand of ear-candy. Other times I itch to swap 'em out for some good single coils.

Pros: Crisp, grit, bright, strong B string response
Cons: Pickup covers do not fit Fenders

I got a Squire Affinity V and was considering getting new pickups. These pickups are amazing. They sound 10 times better than the ones that came on my bass. When both pickups are the same volume I get a very agressive and slightly scooped tone, which is amazing. The B string response is also very good, especially when I lower the volume on the neck pickup.

The only downside I found was that the pickup covers, at least on the 5 string set I bought, don't fit properly; the holes for the mounting screw are too close together. However, this was solved by using the pickup covers that came with the orginal pickups. They don't fit properly, but its a small price to pay for such great pickups.

Pros: Sound, clarity, noiseless!
Cons: Um....none?

I bought these as an upgrade for my MIJ Fender 60's reissue jazz. I specifically purchased these for the humbucking factor, as I like to tweak my tone a bit for certain songs. With my stock pups, running anything but both wide open sounded like bad AM radio.

I dropped these in, and what a difference! My $200 bass sounds like a monster. Clear, punchy, with plenty of 'bass' on tap, yet enough definition and growl to let you know there's a Jazz in the room.

I'm thinking about getting a 70's Vintage Modified Squier, and you can bet that I'll be picking up another set to drop in...

Pros: Really punchy, great tne
Cons: Does not seem to cut through as good as some of my other basses

I dropped a set of these in my Lakland 55-01 along with an Adere preamp. Turned the Lakland on it's head. I get compliments on the sound of this bass almost every time I play it. I love the sound - but it does seem a little weak on output, but I make it up with my Eden WTDI pedal. I like this set-up so much it has become my main bass.

Pros: Modern, hi-fi, smooth, refined, clean, punchy, powerful
Cons: not the best choice for traditional single-coil midrange grind

I rarely rate anything a perfect "10". I'm making an exception in this case.

The other Ultra Jazz reviews here are all basically true. It's a fabulous choice for that modern, hi-fi tone that works so well for funk, nu-school R&B, pop, smooth jazz - and modern rock. I love that tone, so I love these pickups. The fact that I'm using them in a modern neck-through bass, along with an Aguilar OBP-3 onboard preamp, and DR stainless steel Lo-Riders strings, further supports and reinforces what the Ultra Jazz brings, so for me they've been an excellent choice.

Where the Ultra Jazz may disappoint, however, is in doing classic rawk, hard rawk - or any other genre that emphasizes a growling, aggressive midrange. Since the Ultra Jazz are slightly scooped in the upper mids, clean not dirty, and not super high-output for that matter, they're really not the best choice for those applications - particularly in a passive instrument. However, this is really more a problem of player expectations, rather than a "flaw" of the pickups themselves. The fact that they have the identical form factor as traditional Fender Jazz single coils undoubtedly throws off some people.

If you buy a set of these with your eyes open - knowing what they will do...and what they will not do - you'll love 'em.
