I’ve been waiting for the honeymoon period to be over before writing a review for the Ampeg BA300/210 combo amplifier. I’ve had it for several months now; using it at home for practice, at band rehearsals and at gigs. I searched long and hard for reviews on the BA300 before purchasing it but could find none. Hopefully these words may help someone make that final procurement decision.
The best word to describe this amp is TONE. The 12AU7 tube preamp and solid state power amp do a great job producing that classic SVT sound. Upon hearing the BA300 at rehearsal the first time, our lead guitarist said several times, “I can’t believe the tone coming out of that thing”.
I knew I wanted a hybrid combo. I’ve been playing for 35 years and have used everything from heavy amp heads and a 4x10 speaker cabinets to a Sans Amp BDDI. I researched many combo amps within the 250 to 400 watt range (SWR, GK, Fender, Eden, Ampeg, and Ashdown) for about six months. My criteria were specific and it whittled the list of possible contenders down considerably.
1. The amp must have a tube preamp for warmth
2. The amp must have 10-inch speakers for tight clarity
3. The amp must be no less than 300 watts for punch
4. The amp must have 3-band EQ for full spectrum control
5. The amp must have a variable compressor for attack balance
6. The amp must weigh less than 75 pounds
7. The amp must cost less than $1000
With the BA300’s Ultra-Hi and Ultra-Lo switches, Bass, Mid, Low, Horn Level controls and Style selector, I can dial-up almost any sound (tone) I desire. However, I strive to achieve that classic 70’s pop/rock bass sound: clear, warm, tight, with some punch.
I play a Fender Precision, American Standard (passive), bass with a maple fingerboard in a working pop/rock band. I use D’Addario Chromes (flatwound strings) with medium string-height and I usually have a foam-mute stuffed under my strings near the bridge. With my Precision’s treble control on 10, and the BA300’s preamp bass at -3 db, the mid at -12 db, and the treble at +3 db, the BA300 sounds amazing. It sits in the mix extremely well.
My need for simplicity is another reason why I chose the BA300. Its simple controls are noteworthy -- I just plug in, adjust the EQ and volume, as needed, and play. I typically don’t use the Ultra-Hi or Ultra-Lo settings and I leave the Style Selector flat and the Horn Level at mid-point.

I bought this amp 5months ago on-line without trying it!!! I trusted the good reviews that I read & beleive I wasn't disappointed.
I used it in Bars, Pubs, Clubs and also on a medium sized Festival stage & never failed!! I crank it up to 3/4 (Gain & Master), plug my Stingray/Spector via the effect pedal board and bang... awesome. I can be heard by all the band!
Ain't that big to handle & ain't that heavy (all you need are two balls!!)
Recommended!!!

A year down the road.....
The amp is good no doubt, however lately I have been messing around with various effects and overdrive sounds and this amp is not responding as I wished....
Maybe I needed the 600 watts versions.... my band is getting heavier & louder so maybe that is the reason....
overall good amp....

This little combo kits butt as long as you dont use drop d. Its nice and loud with great warmth. I had a peavey TNT 115 and replaced it with this and I am just amazed at the tone difference. Love the built in compression and the horn level.
Overall very easy to use and works great at any gig.

not much use for compression level, could be a little bit louder, no limiter

I kept going back and forth between the GK mb210 and this amp. In the end I went with this amp (even though $100 more) for two main reasons:
tone and ported cab. Two things Ive come to love. I love a ported cab and I love that Ampeg tone. Sure, I could have used the extra 50 watts that the GK provides, and yes I could have used 20 less pounds...But darn it, I love that Ampeg tone...It sounds amazing with my Musicman Sterling HS....
