Description:

The warmth of tube amps has been the goal for most of the over-drive pedals that exist. However, the Tube Screamer has been the choice 2nd to none by people searching for the best, because it lets the guitar sing so well in its original voice. The tone can be heard in playing by countless musicians over the years and still keeps fascinating new generations.

Pros:
Grit, mid-range, cuts through the mix well
Cons:
Sucks your low end, never truly clean
The TS9 is great for grit. It mimics an overdriven tube, but unlike a SansAmp or other modellers, it doen't try to sound like a specific amp. This keeps the TS9 from sounding like you're running a second preamp into your amp, and instead sounding like an overdrive pedal.
The tone is mid-range heavy, making perfect for cutting through the mix. The treble is boosted slightly, again adding to the cutting power. Now here comes the downside, there is loss of low-end. It doesn't make your bass sound weak or bottomless, it just sounds like you cut the lows. The plus from this is, when you crank the Drive to max you don't get fat fuzz, you just get crazy overdrive. However the Drive has a downside, no matter how low you put it -- even zero -- it has grit.
In short the TS9 adds grit and mids, and cuts lows.
