Description:
|
This is a single cut 5-string neck-through bass, with the 34" scale. It has 3-piece Flame Maple neck with thin ebony strips between the laminates. The Fingerboard is made from Malagassy Rosewood which looks and feels more like an Ebony but without the extra brightness of Ebony. The body wings are American Walnut and the top is Mappa Burl. There are Ebony stripes between the different wood laminates.
The bass has 2 Nordstrand Fat Stack pickups, John East's electronics (w active-passive and dual coil/single coil switch) and Hipshot/ETS hardware. Erick made also wooden control knobs for the bass.
The finish is clear satin.

It seems that Woodandtronics (WT, Italy) is one of the very best newcomers on the custom made bass guitar market during recent years. This particular bass was made especially for me in 2008 using all the options I could list. I really have to thank the luthiers - Mr. Enrico Pasini and Erick Furlan for this remarkable piece of art!
It's very resonant and extremely easy to play. In fact, I haven't played any other bass which comes even close to it playability wise (NB! I own several high end basses like MTDs, Sadowskys, Nordstrands, Status, Pedullas etc.)
The sound coming out from this bass is just awesome. As I said I have had a lot of expensive custom basses but this particular bass is a way better than all the others I have ever had. I played this bass against several high end instruments like Fodera, Ken Smith, MTD, Alleva Coppola, Ken Lawrence to name a few. Although all of these instruments are completely different animals and most of them are really good basses my WT Chronos beat them all in most aspects.
The pickups and electronics give me a huge array of different tones. The sound is very full and has the full spectrum of frequencies starting from lows to extreme high end sizzle. The parametrical mids give me any sound I can imagine and they all sound extremely good and very musical. It's my first choice both for stage and for the studio. To be true, there is nothing I would like to change in that instrument.
The action of the bass is the best I have ever tried. The factory set-up was so perfect that I didn't change anything when I got it. The pickups were also adjusted for my taste. The fretwork is perfect as is the overall finish. I can say it's a perfect instrument!
I have played this bass almost a year now and it's very durable. Although it has a very thin neck it stays tuned. All the components and parts are top notch, so no worries for loosing a tuner or anything ells.
I have done tens of gigs without a backup, it's a rock solid tool!
You cannot find better customer support than Woodandtronics offer!!! Period! Enrico is a top bassplayer and he knows what a bassplayer needs. He is incredibly kind and helpful, extremely easy to deal with!
I've been playing for 28 years and this bass is so far my best instrument. I had before a 33" scale WT Chronos which was also great but this one is even better. I decided to sell all my other basses and order at least 2-3 more basses from Enrico and Erick. In fact, there will be my first Signature bass called Alvistar ready next week!!!

Appearance, TONE, variety of sounds, quality build throughout.

Cons:

Frets needed a little filing on the edges, perfer pickup blend

I'll second the original review. The W&T Chronos is an awesome instrument with a great tonal variety. I get a very accurate P-bass tone from the front pickup, the blend sound is a little heavy on the neck pickup which gives the thing a seriously beefy sound. The rear pickup gives a great, barky mid tone that makes me want to dig in to the strings every so often. Pretty much any sound I need is in there. Great tonal palette.
I've owned some boutique basses like MTD 535, custom Zon, Hanewinckel, Kinal, etc and this one is right there with the best of 'em.
My only complaint is that I had to file the fret ends myself, 'cause they were a little rough, and I would prefer a pickup blend pot to the dual volume. I can probably fix that if it really bugs me enough, although I'm not familiar with the McKeen preamp. I guess the fret ends thing was an oversight.
Seems like this has a combination of gloss and satin finishes on it, I believe it is nitro. Brass nut, Nordstrand pickups. Some kinda funky bridge I've never seen but it looks like a high quality piece. Mine weighs around 9 to 9.5lbs, just guessing. Not the lightest, but not heavy, either.
I've thoroughly enjoyed this bass and it's seen a few shows with me.
