Description:
|
The mahogany body has asymetrical 2-cutaway-design (like the Victory series), the 3-piece maple neck is bolt on having an ebony fretboard with 22 frets and pearl dot markers. The headstock is kept in a sort of Jackson-style shape and has 4 black Gibson/Schaller BML tuners. The bridge is a Gibson/Schaller 3D4-version and is as all the rest of the hardware black. The bass is fitted with two small passive humbuckers (are they?) which had been used in other models like the Explorer or Grabber as well. 2 Volume (for each pickup) and one master tone control.

Well, this bass is no substitue for a P or J Bass. It has a warm sound due to the mahogany body, not as punchy as a T-Bird though. The playability is nice, the neck's profile is similar to a P-Bass neck (and yes, it is 34" scale). It is good for rock and blues, not really suitable for funky stuff as the sound is quite midrangey. I got this without the case, but it is a problem as a normal fender case doesn't fit, the headstock is too big. The finish is okay, but considering that these are Custom Shop instruments the finishes seem a bit sloppy. The bass sounds best with a fresh set of round wound strings. All in all, I like this bass better than many of Gibson's other efforts. This bass came up in 1986 and was discontinued around 1987/88, so there are not that many of them floating around, but they can be had for cheap.
