I changed my Music Man Stringray for this Human Base last year because I wanted more sound options. All I can say - my 4 stringed dreams came true with this baby. I can do pretty much any kind of music on this bass and this instrument does not limit you in any way; it's all up to your skills (damn I can't blame it on the bass anymore ).
Both Delano pickups sound great. I usually play both pickups blend 50/50 which gives a very nice allround sound. They are splittable; you can run them either in humbucking mode or as single coils that have less output and sound a bit more airy.
The bridge pickup is middy, punchy and very articulate. It cuts through very nicely. If you roll off some highs, you get an almost Jazz bass sound that you can walk on. If you scoop the mids, boost bass and highs, it gives you a great rock sound which also sounds excellent with a pick.
The front pickup is somewhat P-bass like, heavy and bassy. But not too boomy or anything that would hide the details of what you're playing. It's sound is quite a contrast to the bridge pickup. I use it for walking bass or some 60's or 70's appregiated runs with a bit of a bass boost. Very nice vintage feel.
The great thing about the Glockenklang preamp is not only that it both boosts and cuts, has the highs at 18 kHz which affects the presence of your sound, it is also active/passive splittable. So if you mostly tweak your sound on the amp (as I usually do using voicing filters), you can bypass the active electronics on your bass. It not only saves your battery life, it also gives you the option to "save" a sound on the bass preamp and then kick it in by pushing in volume pot and activating the preamp. This is what I do in a couple of songs live - I boost bass and high and cut the mids (in order to compensate the volume difference) and run the bass with two very different sounds with a single push of a button right at my fingers.
I only wish I could get a 3-way toggle switch for the pickup selection instead of the blend knob. I never use the in-between positions (such as 75% bridge and 25% neck pickup), I always use either both PUs 50/50 or the front/back pickup alone. I used to play electric guitar and I was very comfortable with the strat-style PU switching. But the blend knob is easy to handle, it's just a matter of taste.
After having this bass for a while, I realized that the whole sonic spectrum that I need for my songs can be handled just by toggling between pickups, working the bass preamp (rolling of highs, scooping mids) and of course different play techniques (fingers, pick, slap). I took all other tonal modifications such as extra EQs or off board preamps out of my chain. I simply don't need them because this Human Bass gives me all I need - from hard rock scooped sound all the way to Eric Clapton and Chubby Checker.
...and the bass looks beautiful, too ;-) mine has natural finish and I put either the blue or silver DR Strings on it that make a very nice optical contrast to the subtle colors of the bass body and neck.
