Description: The GHS 4-RMB is a set of four electric bass guitar strings made of a custom material described by GHS as a "nickel-iron alloy". The string ends are silked with an aqua-blue color. The 4th, or "low E", string is of the "Taper Core" type. The "Tapered" portion of the 4th string is long enough that it seems meant for a string-through-body type bridge. The wound section of the strings are long enough that either a 34" or 35" bass should be able to use the them without a problem, as long as the bridge is of the string-through-body type.

Pros: High Tension Allows Low Action, Excellent Fundamental Freqs, Perfect High-Freq Cutoff
Cons: High String Stiffness Has Its Trade-offs, Hard To Find

I bought these strings from Juststrings.com not knowing anything about them. When I opened the package, I noticed a small amount of corrosion on the 2nd string. I assume that this is because the package has been sitting somewhere for a long time. I assume that this "somewhere" is the Juststings.com warehouse. I initially tried to mount them on my new Warwick Thumb BO, but the tapered section of the 4th string was so long that the windings did not begin until the middle of the neck pickup. Instead, I installed them on my 2005 American Fender Jazz Bass. This bass has a string-through-body type bridge, so everything worked perfectly, almost. At the headstock end of the 4th string, the silk end begins so far down the string that part of my 4th tuning ped was wrapping wound, metal string. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd strings' tuning pegs were wound with only the aqua-blue silk ends. Ideally, it would seem these strings should be mounted on either a 35", string-through-body type bass or a 34" string-through-body bass that has tuning pegs at least 2.5" from the nut. This is purely an aesthetic critique, of course. The outer winding is either made of some unique material or ground/pressure/half round, because the sliding of the fingers across the strings creates much less "unpleasant" noises that even NPS set of strings would make. The Fundamental on all four strings is very strong and even despite the fact that the strings have a high "perceived tension", or stiffness. They are very easy to play thanks to the outer windings' special treatment/material. The extra tension allowed me to tighten the truss rod just a smidge, and low the action, very slightly. Since putting them on, they have grown on me. I actually have put them back on, after trying another set. The strings don't seem to age much. If you like alot of 'clank' in your tone, then these are not for you. There are certainly highs, but no Very Highs or Extra Brights. The fundamental is super strong and punching.
