Pros:

great range of tone, sounds great overdriven, reliable, loud, sounds awesome straight thru w/ no add-ons!
|
|
Cons:
|
None, except a bit pricey, but honestly I think you get what you pay for, and it\\\'s worth it. I\\\'ll never buy another head unless this one croaks. I picked mine up used and I thought it was a great deal.

From punchy lows and clear, well-defined highs along with strong or mellow mids, this amp will do whatever you need it to. Allowing control of the tube plate voltage give you natural compression or high sensitivity. Great all tube preamp sounds with mixed reliable solid state power amp inside. Tone possibilities are almost endless! You really don\'t need more tone than this provides. Can go straight thru to cabinet without additional preamp or effects and sound unbelievable, can hook right into PA, or record with it. Has great high power Speakon connectors, and pairs up awesome with an Ampeg PR-410HLF cabinet.

Great Ampeg build quality.

Anemic Sounding...

A well built head but sorry, this Ampeg just doesn\'t work for me. I have had and heard better solid state heads than this amp with a tube pre, and the rated 450 watts rms just isn\'t there. Even with the extensive eq section, I just couldn\'t get close to that fat warm sound I used to get from my V4B. The fan is noisy in comparison to other fan operated units I\'ve had. I really think there are better sounding amps out there for comparable money. Don\'t get me wrong, I love Ampeg but not this amp.

Good tone and verstaile

Cons:

Not very punchy and not very dependable

I used one of these with an SWR 410 for a couple of years and really liked the features (tuner mute, eq...) but it never really compared to my old GK head. Then one day it went out on me and I found out that it would be over $300 to fix it and it\'d take 6 weeks at the Ampeg factory to get it back. Needless to say, that didn\'t work for me. I dumped it on the repair shop and picked up a used 800RB which has served me faithfully. Plus it has a lot more tone even if it lacks that tube quality.

Pros:

Great tone, reliable, powerful, and well built
|
|
Cons:
|
heavyish, almost too many tone controls
|
|
I\'ve owned this amp for five years now and it has been absolutely reliable. I use it with initially a Genz Benz 410XB and now a Genz Benz NeoX 212T. Both are 4-ohm cabinets and both delivered wonderful, deep, rich bass tones at tremendous volume levels with this amp. It has every tone control you could wish for, plus a few extra. The ability to control the plate voltage to the tubes allows you to control the clarity and compression they are capable of delivering. It is compact in size but heavy. I\'m delighted with the tone I get from it and expect to have it for many years to come.

requires quite a bit of tweaking, getting used to, noisy fan

Now I\'m playing this head 6 years. In the beginning it\'s quite difficult to operate. Once you get the hang of it, it plays anything. Best for rock music, but the typical \'grit\' can be a great addition to any type of music. Very important feature is the plate voltage, the response control of the driver tubes. Changes the whole response of the amp, jazz to hardrock. The svtIIIpro is at its very best in band conditions. If you\'re mostly playing alone or very clean music, take something more hifi. Very versatile head, not the easiest. Lots of punch.

none... it\'s an overall good product and has been quite reliable

One thing people forget about these heads... there are five preamp tubes...
If the head starts to sound like crap, change them! Trust me on this one! I\'ve had great luck with this unit and no issues.
It is SO easy to dial in a great and killer sound. 450 watts is plenty of power and it handles my Ampeg 8x10 Classic cab with great ease!
The 9 band graphic equalizer does an excellent job of complimenting the rest of the preamp section. I can also appreciate the midrange frequency selection and the option to cut and boost that mid frequency. I like to use upper mids, rather than too much treble. I get an overall fat round and friendly tone that all of my sound guys appreciate. They especially comment and applause the EQ settings and the fact that I use 10\" speakers, rather than floppy big ones.
Don\'t get me wrong, I have no issues with bigger speakers... just a matter of opinion.
I love the fact that this thing has a tuner out, and a direct line out. The D.I. has saved my behind at countless gigs. Sound engineers love that feature, too. They look in my rack and see that I have that on my head, as well as my Sansamp RBI...
You also get an electrical outlet on the back and the option to use a Speakon™ cable or a regular speaker cable to go to your cabinet. There\'s an effects loop, but I don\'t use it. I prefer the one on my Sansamp preamp.. more details on my review for the SANSAMP BASS DRIVER RBI.
Have a good day!

Great low end

The nicest bass head I\'ve used to date. My last head was a Music Man one-fifty, so maybe this is not a great comparison.
Both are played thru a Carvin cab with a 15\" JBL and two horns. The MM had a nicer sount at higher freqs and the svt3 is vastly better on the low end. Perhaps I should mention I play a rhodes piano thru these as much as I play bass...
The impressive 450 watts (into a 4 watt cab) indicated in the specs might be over rated - but when turning it up past 5 I start to worry about my 8 ohm cab (the amp is supposed to be 275 watts into an 8 ohm load)... its plenty loud. The speakon connector is a definite plus for those that want or need a loud system, otherwise it\'s like trying to push whole eggs thru a straw.
Anyway I like it and if I wanted to carry more equipment around I might use it in a bi amp partnership with the music man, the svt3 for the 15 in the carvin cab and the musicman into the two horns of the carvin cab... mostly I say this for playing the rhodes piano... the ampeg svt3 by it\'s self works just fine for what I do on bass. The low end of the svt3 is not a problem. If you like more of a tubey sound on the high end, you might not like the svt3. This head does do a pretty good job of reproducing the sound of your instrument, freqs high or low... I\'m sure there are better heads out there, and better cabs, some things my ear has not heard yet. For the price and weight (having to carry the thing around) I\'m happy to have it.

It's built tough and the sound is just amazing.. It gave my ampeg 410he life i didnt know it had!! And when i plugged it into my ampeg 810e i was LITERALLY blown away!!! If you're debating whether to get this head you should def. head down to your local music store and try one out... Im gonna buy another new one just so i can have a backup!!!

First off, I'd love to find where all of these guys are getting these for $450, even used! They're $1300+ retail, and street price is $899+.. but good for them!
I played Crate, Hartke, SWR and now Ampeg... in that order.. and I'd also rate them in that very order.. The Ampeg just sounds full.. almost brings new life to my bass, which didn't sound half bad thru the SWR I had before.. But the tube pre-amp on the Ampeg is the bomb! you're not going to get a better sounding amp/preamp combo for under $1500.. trust me, I looked and looked..

Great sounding amp, I managed to get a good range of different sounds.
Looks cool, and the controls are convenient and clear.
Abilities include tuner out, footswitch out for mute and EQ.
These are very useful on stage.
The DI out does not work well, despite having been checked by Ampeg and reported as functioning normally.
This amp sounds great, but does not have enough power for large gigs without distorting badly. I have tried all sorts of fun and games with different settings and even different speaker cabs, but cannot get enough volume out of it without losing sound quality.
Great for studio use and small gigs. I like it the sound, but it doesn't give me enough.

I bought this amp in 1993 and have used it on an average 3 times a week since. Not just at my home but out at gigs. Always was loud enough, and always had a great sound. I am not a gadget guy and love the easy of this set up. I have used 4x10 with 1x15, 4x10's only. 8x10's & 2x15's all sounded great. I have only ever had to take this amp in for repairs one time and it was to tighting up solder and replace 1 input jack.

Bought this after having a B2R for 6 months, wanting to get a more "tube" tone. Get great tones from it but NOT a TUBE-ALL TUBE- tone. Fan a bit noisy. Good controls & EQ options. Works well for all types of music BUT for me I need to get back to ALL tube-as I had used for 20 yrs or so B4 trying out the S.S. amps & hybrids!

to me the Tube Gain really doesn't seem to do much, fan is noisy, having dial and slider EQ adjustment is kindof redundant - why not eliminate one set and drop the price?

This is my first amp. I just bought this amp (used) a couple of months ago and I'm still getting to know it.
One thing I want to share is a problem I'm experiencing - a mild buzzing in the high-end. At first I thought I had a bad horn, but after testing another cab and another bass, the head was confirmed.
So I searched a few threads on this site and found a few that deal with this exact problem; seems many other players out there are experiencing the same thing.
Apparently, the common solution is a MOSFET bias adjustment (small blue pot close to the tubes). I've located some schematics for this amp (thanks TB community!), I took it to my amp tech - the fix worked. I posted more details in the Forum in case you're interested...
I like the amp so far, and I'm sure it'll fit the bill. Just thought I'd share this info in the product review section.

I’ve been using my SVT-3- Pro for just over a month. I recently replaced my Eden gear for this head and an Ampeg HLF410 cabinet. So far I have abosolutely no regrets. This setup gives me more power than I need in most clubs and I love the tone.

Well thought out package - lots of power and flexbility.
|
|
Cons:
|
A bit noisy overall.
|
|
Been using this amp for a few months as part of a gig. Overall, I'm well satisfied with the amplifier itself - there is a ton of tonal flexibility (maybe even too much - as another reviewer mentioned: perhaps having two separate EQ's is a little overboard?) and it seems to deliver adequate power. Overall package is attractive looking and seems well built.
A couple of issues though:
1) This amp is much more noisy than other amplifiers I've used before - the fan is fairly loud and runs continuously and the tube section seems to produce a random crackling sound (I say random because this sound even occurs at times when I'm not even playing or touching my bass in addition to during songs) that is pretty loud and distracting.
2) A small issue, but unlike other amps I've used, when you turn the power off this amp produces a pretty loud high-pitched signal for a second or so - not through the connected speakers, but instead through the DI out to the mains! Quite annoying at the end of a set if you aren't aware of it.
