Pros:

Price, sound quality, tubitytubitytubity, huge bass
|
|
Cons:

a little trebly when EQ is flat. I don\'t use the tweeter on the cab.
|
|
Great amp, and fairly hi-fi at times, especially with the matching cab. To put the tonal quality of this amp into perspective, I tried it side by side with my mesa m-pulse 360 and Eden 410XLT rig, which retails 1700 CAD for head and 1200 CAD for cab. This amp retails 1400 for the combo. In other words, my rig is over two times the price. What did I find out? \"there\'s some things money can\'t buy!\" Everyone who heard it (band members, other people in the store) agreed that the traynor rig blew the other out of the water! Needless to say, I am now a proud traynor owner (and one of the first of the YBA200 I might add ). BUY THIS AMP! You won\'t regret it, especially if you want a huge sound... (who doesn\'t?)

Pros:

Great tube warmth, enough growl and plenty of cut

|
Cons:

The need to retube eventually?
|
|
An outstanding small amp, great sounds everywhere, easy to get a smooth beautiful overdrive or keep it clean. It really likes multiple cabs too. Along with its matching cabinet it provides an excellent tone, always warm but never booms even when I crank the bass which is nice because I like to shake my house without blowing my drivers. When you overdrive the poweramp tubes it sounds AMAZING, best sound I\'ve ever heard, no pedal can match it. I haven\'t been able to gig with it yet but I assure you it sounds great and has a bunch of useful tones in it. Sounds good with my Sterling and Warwick, boosts the growl from the Jazz and smooths it out some, I can\'t say enough positive things about these amps and cabs. Yorkville has a surefire winner on their hands with this one.

Price, Verstality, Sound

Cons:

Lack of Power
|
|
The head sounds quite good, although a little under powered for applications requiring you to cut through guitar (I\'m in a punk band). I\'m currently using it with two sealed Yorkville 1x15\" cabinets and found that I was pushing my amp to hard to get the levels/volume that I needed. To combat the problem, I\'m running a Yorkville BM400 as a slave, and now I find my rig sounds great. I\'ll post another review once I buy new cabinets, in case my opinion changes.

Everything everyone has said about this amp is true. This is like a baby SVT. No, it\'s not as good as an SVT but at about half the weight and about one third the price, you can\'t beat the YBA 200. The controls are very basic and that\'s how I like it. If you\'re one of those people who likes lots of rack mounted effects and processors then this might not be for you but if you like gritty, nasty old-school tube-amp bass tones then this is perfect. Every time I play I get compliments on the bass tone. People are awed by the sound of this amp. I play through an Avatar 1X15 and an Avatar 2X10. I play a G&L Climax bass.
I don\'t really like the sound when the active pickups are turned on but otherwise it sounds awesome. I\'m actually thinking of getting a Fender Jazz (a friend has a jazz he plays through an early 70s SVT and I\'m thinking that the Jazz through the YBA200 might sound just as good).
I\'ve also read quite a bit about switching the tubes. I haven\'t bothered to do that yet as I\'m perfectly content with the way the amp sounds with the standard sovtek tubes but maybe in another year or so I\'ll consider putting in some KT88\'s to replace the 6550 sovteks.

Pros:

Great all tube tone, light for a tube amp
|
|
Cons:
|
because cost is low, and tone is so good, some gear snobs might feel threatened
|
|
How can I not gush over this amp?
1. All tube tone: great out of the box... Very versatile! EQ'ed flat it sounds a little hi-fi. With simple EQing you can go from and old school low end thump, to hi-fi, to roaring SVT mids rock with plenty of dirt.
2. Great features: Auto-biasing. Control of Damping factor. Tuner and balanced line out. Simple yet effective EQ.
3. Light weight. 41 lbs is light for all tube.
4. Ideal power output for small to medium gigs. The harder you push it the better it sounds. Not a bedroom amp if you want to experience the full tone of this amp (sounds a little scooped at very low volumes).
5. Great price: sounds as good as tube amps 3 times it's price (compared mine to an orange ADB200 and ampegs)
6. Unbeatable warranty: 2 year "even if you break it warranty." 6 month coverage on tubes.
7. Great Service: Traynor service has been stellar to date… all emails I have sent asking questions were answered on the same day.
8. Rock solid construction: they don't offer such a great warranty for no reason.
9. Did I mention the great tone? I made it sound even better after I swapped in JJ tubes in the preamp and JJ KT88's in the power section (this amp is auto biasing so I did it all myself). I now have increased mid presence and a more focused bottom. Tone went from GREAT to GRRRRREAT.
9. Looks frickin’ cool: I love how it is designed to showcase the 4 power tubes glowing in a line behind the grill. I also added white piping to the amp and cab for that classic black and white SVT look.
10: Love the matching YBX1510 cab: Tweeter if you like hi-fi. 2x10 1x15 for the best of both worlds…big low end and tight punch. 81 lbs but I added casters and moving it is now a breeze. Sounds amazing with the YBA200.
All tube tone (far superior to solid state, I will NEVER go back) used to come at the cost of weight and price. You couldn’t have the tone without the other two. The YBA200 lets you have all of the tone without the cost or the weight. And p.s. …this is not a great amp “for the price.” It is an amp that sounds as good as amps 2-4 times the price (orange is only one example) but for some odd reason still sells for a low price. Proof that sometimes you are just paying for a name.
I would buy this pair again in a heartbeat.

Sound

I just cannot find a sound I like with this thing. I absolutley HATE the "range" control. I have sent a few e-mails to Traynor to try to get someone to explain exactly what it does. No response. I guess they don't know either. The only setting that sounds decent is almost all the way to the left (about 7 o'clock). It farts out at about 5 or 5.5 on the master volume control. The pre-volume, when driven into overdrive/distortion sounds like a big crappe sandwich. I wish I had kept my money.

none that have come to light yet

This is the newer YBA200-2 with the KT-88 power tubes and manual bias. I use it with a Fender Am. P-bass, Am. Jazz, and a Music Man Stingray run through a Mesa Power House 212 cab. The fan is extremely quiet and very efficient at keeping things cool. The EQ is very usable, especially with the "range" function included. Sound is thick and delicious tube bass, and can be very articulate with some EQ use. It has plenty of oomph and easily cuts through in a two guitar, keyboard, loud drummer classic rock band. I wish it had a bit more though, but I certainly don't consider it underpowered (for small to med. venues). Build quality is solid and sturdy throughout from the jacks to the cabinet. Heavy duty handles, metal corner covers. I've had it six months with no problems at all through regular weekly practices and gigs. I would buy another in a heart beat.

I was looking for a tube amp that didn't weigh 80+ lbs to use in place of my SVT for "acoustic" gigs or just noodling around and I came across the Traynor. I also knew that Doug Pinnick (Kings X) used an old YBA is his signal chain and thought that I might try to bi-amp similarly. I found my YBA-200 on eBay in new condition for a very good price. I am very pleased with this amp, especially for noodling around at the house and for lower volume gigs. This amp is constructed well and thoughtfully (I like the rubber feet included on the sides for setting the amp down vertically from one handle, well done! There are the traditional rubber feet on the bottom as well). Overall, this is a great little amp. I have tried to use it a a "full volume" rock rehearsal, and she just couldn't keep up, but for a low-volume gig (small club, acoustic), this amp is a winner. This is a solid addition to my "arsenal" and I would have difficulty parting with it.
