Pros:
Flexible tone, Cuts feedback, Great Compresser
Cons:
somewhat low output
I bought this unit primarily for my upright bass.
Overall I like it. The EQ and Depth (basically a variable low cut) give you plantly of tone shaping (though a contour would be nice). With my fishman full circle pickeup into the return of my GK BM150 it\'s a great combo. I also like the fact I can plug my electric base in the main input and my EQ set separately. The only thing that surprised me is the output is not terribly loud. Playing a Fender Jazz into a mixing board via XLR I had to add a little gain to equal the volume of CD I playing wth. With my ProSonus TubePRE that was not the case). Finally the phase inverse did dramatically cut down on feedback and the compressor work really well.

Pros:
small, versatile, effective
Cons:
sound is good, not great, a little too much like an electric bass
I use this with upright. I normally use an Avalon u5 but it's bulky and sometimes it reproduces too much of what the piezo pickups (realist, rev solo) put out. The Fishman is light, small, runs on a battery and has a compressor, which is cool in that it really smooths out some of the clacky piezo artifacts. The eq options seem very well voiced and effective, it's quiet, and the phase reversal switch is useful, as I suppose the phantom power could be also. I can't quite figure out what the "depth" control is actually doing. I like it, I just think it tends to move the upright tone a little towards electric bass, a little generic. I usually have the compressor on around 10-11, the depth at around 10, and the high mid slider cut pretty significantly, maybe a little bass cut.
It's a good unit for its size and price

Sound quality

I bought this and returned it the next day. I didn't like it at all. It sounded pretty bad with my equipment ... and all my other equipment is good, so there was no excuse. Here's my set up:
Czech bass w/ Fishman Full Circle
Mackie Mixer
Tech21 SansAmp RBI (Rack mount version of Bass DI)
Carvin 1000 Watt power amp
Aguilar Cabinet w/ a 12" and a tweeter
I had been using my upright with the SansAmp as both DI and pre-amp, but I wanted to get a pre-amp specifically for the upright - in order to switch quickly between it and my electric during shows.
There was no configuration in which the Fishman sounded anywhere as good as the SansAmp.
At best, it was a very expensive, transparent DI box.
As a preamp, though - attempting to use the tone controls - I had these problems:
* Could become quite noisy - lots of high end hiss.
* Most of the EQ did nothing for me. I couldn't really detect
any real effect on the tone.

Pros:

Clarity, anti-feedback, sound

Cons:

none

Before using this preamp I had a lot of problems with feedback and clarity. I play hybrid URB with Revolution Solo (original) and Bass max pickup through AI Contra. Fishman platinum amplified Revolution Solo just enough so signal is usable, also pronounced its great sound without compromising acoustic characteristics. Bass Max is more mid-rangy, very hot pickup and Fishman Platinum easily kills some of the annoying mids and clarify the muddiness. If I was to use Bass Max without the preamp I was getting the feedback on very low volumes. I tried everything with positioning the amp away, close, on the back, on the chair, you name it. With Fishman the feedback problem is finally gone. I can pump up the volume on the AI with no problem. I used older models of Fishman bass preamps, K&K preamps, even my BG gear (I have a lot of preamps and pedals) but this one is a winner by far.

I tried everything to tame the feedback from my Gliga 5-string. Nothing worked until I bought the Fishman. If you're a double bass player, you need to spend an hour or so experimenting with settings to get it right, but once you do, you can start to get some volume from your bass. I bought mine about 6 months ago and I'm still on the original battery after being used for about 2 hours every week. Every upright player should get one of these. Gear used:

I have had this preamp for about 4 years now and it has come in handy. While it is not a part of my main rig, except with my upright sometimes, I use it a lot while practicing to help shape my tone at low volumes. I use it for both electric and upright at times and it works well with both, but definitely better with upright. You can get a wide variety of sounds with it. One of my favorite features is the depth knob which really can help give your tone some punch.

super portable, dynamic, phantom power and decent onboard compressor
Cons:
flimsy knobs and cheesy "bass" logo

Sounds great w the Taylor AB1 in difficult acoustic rooms. I set the dials to a permanent spot and just covered them in duct tape since they're kind of wobbly. The EQ part is solid though. Good versatiliy, just kind of fragile.
