Pros: Impeccable craftsmanship and quality, playability, tonal variety, and sheer \"wow\" factor every time I take it out of the case
Cons: Everyone wants to play it!

This is my third Alembic (I own a 2003 Europa and a 2003 Spyder limited edition), and it is rapidly becoming my favorite. I just can\'t say enough good things about it. I was very fortunate to obtain it for the price I got - it originally listed at over $12K. It is reputedly the bass John Entwistle was supposedly working on with Alembic at the time of his death. Right now, to my knowledge, there are only four in existence. I know the owner of the first one, and he explained a bit of the history behind the instrument (and you can see a bit of that in the Featured Custom archive on the Alembic site - www.alembic.com). Bottom line is it is an exquisite example of what happens when artisans build one an instrument. Quality is superlative (as it is on all my Alembics). Alembics cost a lot, but they\'re worth every penny, and the company stands behind their handiwork 150%. You will not find a better instrument IMHO.

Tonally, I can pretty much get any tone I choose. Like all Alembics, it has low pass filters instead of standard tone controls or standard boost/cut switches/pots of most active electronics. The filter acts like a wah-wah pedal, and it\'s just amazing. You can go from bright and trebly to muddy and dark and everywhere in between. I\'ve used it for blues, funk, rock, you name it, the Wing (and all my Alembics) can do it. While I can\'t exactly dial in a Fender Jazz or Rickenbacker tone, the other available tones are so vast and useful that one forgets about it.

The shape, while looking uncomfortable, is balanced and facile whether sitting or standing up. It\'s also very comfortable while slapping and popping as well. And the LEDs are a boon - I played an open mike at night a few days ago, and we were outside. Made a big difference. The action? Just the way I like it - low, low, low. I\'m still working on getting some fret buzz out of it (I use light gauge strings, and that can sometimes be a problem on any bass), but it plays beautifully.

Would I buy another? Absolutely, without reservation. There are lots of bass manufacturers out there, but none (save small independent luthiers who custom make instruments, perhaps) can touch an Alembic. Foderas are very fine instruments, as are Dingwalls, Roscoe, etc. But I\'ve played those and IMHO they just aren\'t at the same level as an Alembic. Think of an Alembic as a playable work of art and you\'ll get the picture.
