Pros: Incredible construction, playability and tone
Cons: none

This bass was built by Matt Schmill, FBB Custom Bass in Amhearst, MA in 2000. The body style is very unusual for me, totally different design. FBB refers to the basic style as their \"Player\" body type, but some work has been done on the lower horn. The neck is marvelous, perfectly constructed for my type of playing (jazz/funk fusion). The headstock is smallish, which likely plays a big part in how perfectly balanced this bass is.

Sound-wise, it gives you everything from a serious gut punch to that as-close-as-you-can-get-to-an-upright-sound without it being an upright. You always hear fretless guys talking about the \"mwahh\" sound? This bass really has that. A gorgeous tone, just incredible. And it records great, especially in the passive mode. Engineers love it!

I bought this bass used from a contact on talkbass.com. It was set up a little to low for my liking, but the adjustments were effortless. After letting a little time go by for the bass to adjust to the Jersey shore climate, a minor tweek of the truss rods put everything exactly in place.

Until you hold a bass built by Matt there is no way to describe how high end this bass really is. He is a master craftsman and uses \"smart wood\" selection when he builds, and it is immediately evident the second you pick the bass up (see the FBBcustom.com site for more info about \"smart wood\". This is true craftsmanship.

I normally do not give these types of high scores during ratings ... I think that people have a tendency to over-rate things just to give some credibility to their purchases. But this bass is a true custom built, highly professional instrument. I had never, ever heard or read a bad review about an FBB prior to buying this bass and now I know why. Matt Schmill has a new customer for life!
