Description:
|
This device has found its way into many of Eddie Van Halen's recordings, adding a shimmery velocity to lead passages or a more dramatic swoosh to muted strumming. Not just for guitars; it works well with bass, keyboards and even vocals. Vary the speed from a subtle, long cycle to a fast, watery warble...and myriad vintage vibrations in between.
Power: Single 9 volt battery or Dunlop ECB-003 AC Adapter
Controls: Footswitch toggles effect on/bypass (red LED indicates on) Speed knob varies rate of phase sweep

I got mine used, but I think I would still pay the new 80 dollar price. The effect is built great, and sounds great. I use it for interludes, slapping, and anywhere i want to change the sound and grab some more attention. With the rubber cover on the single speed knob you can use your foot to turn it, and vary the speed while playing.
For bass I set the speed knob mostly between 7 o\'clock and 10 o\'clock, because I dont really like the warbling effect when it is turned all the war up. Adds some great shimmer to your sound, especially with bright strings.
The white marker on the speed knob is also glow-in-the-dark and is visible onstage. I thought that was pretty cool. Try this one out.

clipping!!

this is a great pedal, soundwise. it's nice and even, and not too over-the-top spacey.
my only problem is that it clips in an ugly way when i play loudly into it... especially with a pick and some light overdrive.
i have a suspicion that my tech 21 bddi's level is a bit too hot, which is what's causing it... but i tried a sovtek small stone in the place of the phase 90 and it was much better. it still clipped, mind, but nowhere near as badly.
still a great phaser, but not that great at handling the heat.
i am keeping it, but i want to try the EH small stone.

I pretty much love this little box. I use it quite often, mostly set between 9 and 12 o clock. Turned up all the way it's too warbly and sounds silly, but kept within reason and it's awesome. No tone suck that I can tell. Probably one of the best "guitar" pedals that can be used for a bass.
I got it for a great deal too - 50.00 including the dunlop adaptor.

I love my vintage phase 90. It's hands down the favorite effect I currently own, and probably one of the best sounding I could possibly own. It handles bass pretty well, and can range from slow and warm to fast and crazy. It's a little more obvious than most phasers I've used, which is nice when you play in a rock band.

Sounds Great With Bass. No ToneSuck. Simple. Wide Range of Phase w/ only 1 Knob.
|
|
Cons:
|
...it may be too simple for the guys who love to tweak!
|
|
This pedal works well for me since it simply gives me what I want in a phaser; one knob that delivers a blend of 1/3 chorus, 1/3 flanger, and 1/3 rotary speaker tone. It's too easy, delivers a useful and neat effect that works well with distortion, octave, and other effects, and it can be very subtle to very silly in one tenth of a second.
I'm sure there are more versatile phasers out there if you are the type who likes to spend hours toying and tweaking all the knobs and switches, but I will bet you are gonna pay much more for them.

I played my bass through one of these babies at a rehersal about a month ago(it was the guitar player's) and knew I had to have one. Now I do and and I'm enjoying this pedal and it's funky sounds a great deal. I think it's perfect for bass it gives it a funky "liquid" sound. I usually use it with the speed about 1 o'clock or 12. Stick a P bass with flats into it and you sound just like Phill Lynot on recordings like "Dancing in the Moonlight" and "Waiting for an Aliby". I love this pedal, it's a lot of fun!

Slight boost in output volume frustrates soundman
|
|
The phase 90 provides a really nice phase, ranging from incredibly subtle to outrageously spacey. I only use it on a few songs; I set it to about 9-10 o'clock for Have a Cigar, and to just above minimum for those long-noted ballads that require some color. One possible downside, but also a positive, is that it adds a bit of volume(or at least perceived volume) to the signal. This frustrates my soundman, but helps me cut through during solos.
All in all, a solid phase unit. Haven't been disappointed yet.

Clipping when played hard
|
|
I bought this while going to guitar center to check out the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe. This little orange box is pretty stunning. Its ridiculously easy to use. 1 speed knob. Unlike other posters here, I am able to get usable sounds everywhere on the knob. But like others when I play hard through my active bass, It likes to clip a bit. But its no problem if you just back off while playing it. Overall a great, easy to use phaser that isnt too hard on your wallet.
