Pros: pros, perfect neck, great bartolini pick ups, beautiful quilt maple finish, plays sweet, super low action without any fret buzz
Cons: none, just gettin used to a 6 string

This thing is mint,I got this from a GC and I love it, the price didnt hurt either. It has a very versatile sound, I am still amazed at the modulus neck, it is the most playable neck I have ever owned. I would reccomend buying a modulus to anybody, but try to get one used first, you will save a ton of money since buying one new is pretty steep. Also, I would also try to find one with the bartolini pick-ups, they sound great.

Pros: feel, looks, sound
Cons: none

I have a Quantum 6 SS with 1 Bartolini and Aguilar pre. This is the finest bass I've ever touched. The neck feels great, the ergos are right, sound is stunning. I also have a Quantum 6 that was converted to fretless. It came with EMGs which were OK but since then I put in a Bart in the bridge position and a dummy in the neck position with 18v Bart preamp - killer! I bought both these basses on ebay for less than $1100 each. It's very unusual to get them that cheap. I've had other fancy basses before - a couple Alembics, a couple Pedullas, 3 S D Curlees - Modulus rules! I don't look at other basses any more. Nuff said.

Pros: Sound, looks, ergos,
Cons: $$

I got my Q6 as a private trade for my Alembic Stanley Clark Signature bass ... plus i got a good chunk of cash because of the price difference in instruments. Both I and the other party are thrilled with our decisions. Mine has the Bartolini pickups and preamp, it's a 2006 and the guy I traded to get it bought it new 7 months before trading with me ... so the bass is really new. This is my 2nd Modulus Quantum. I have a 5 String Fretless (unlined) Quantum with the same electronics package. I love both basses for all the reasons alreadty stated in the about reviews. I went from being an Alembic man to a Modulus man ... and in my opinion, although alembics are worth more and and are frankly worth their stree price that WASN'T a step backwards. The sound is wonderful and balanced and the necks are rock solid. AND they look awesome too. I highly recommend them!

Pros: Clear & punchy sound. xlnt string-to-string evenness, good weight
Cons: have to remove control plate to access batteries.. Grrr!

This Quantum 6 is from 2002. It has the following options: bubinga top, chechen fingerboard, Bartolini pickups and 3-band EQ. It has a transparent finish. The price I paid might seem high compared to the other reviews, but since the current list with these options is around $4400 I don't feel terribly ripped off, especially since I got an instrument that I like so much. This bass is probably the ninth 6-string that I've owned, so I feel like I've gotten a lot more specific about what I like in a 6. I was looking for a very clear, punchy, solid sound, a medium neck profile, decent weight and balance, versatile electronics, and a neck that doesn't need constant truss rod adjustment. This bass succeeds in all those aspects except maybe the electronics.

I have become less of a fan of Bartolini electronics over the years. To me they have a noticeably compressed quality, and the usable cut and boost range is limited - the farther you get from the center detent position, with the exception of the treble cut, the EQ becomes progressively unmusical, if that makes sense. Plus, the mid control has a drastic effect on the overall volume of the bass, which kinda sucks. That said, I think the Bart pickups and electronics are an improvement over the standard EMG offering. I haven't tried a Modulus with the Aguilar preamp option, but based on my experience with those in other basses I've found them to be a little too raw sounding for my taste. I might explore some other preamp options in the future (Audere?), but I'll live with the Bart circuit for now.

Tonally, this bass has a very massive and solid bottom end and a nicely present but not harsh top end. The tone control setting I am liking the best so far is with the blend control slightly toward the neck pickup, the treble and mids slightly cut and the bass control flat. This bass responds really well to a pick attack as well as thumbstyle playing. The chechen fingerboard is a nice option - it gives the bass a woodier feel, not quite as rigid and unforgiving as with the phenolic fingerboard. I think Modulus has really improved their necks over the years - the earliest ones were very heavy and had some strange quirks like resonant frequencies and tendencies to crack in strange ways. They definitely have refined the concept and I'm happy to be able to reap the benefits.

Where this bass really excels is in the quality of the note positions on the E and B strings from the 12th fret upward. On just about every other 6 or 7-string I've played, the poor intonation and unfocused quality of the notes in this region makes me avoid it altogether. This isn't at all the case on the Q6, which is very cool. The low B in general is about the best I've ever played - very even tonally and nicely balanced with the other strings. The strings that the bass came with are D-Addario XL's, .32 - .130. Normally this wouldn't be my first string choice, but they sound and feel pretty nice. I haven't weighed the bass, but I don't think it would kill me to wear it on a 4-hour gig. It is just the slightest bit neck heavy, but not to the point where it affects playability at all.

As I said in the header, my only real complaint about the Q6 is having to remove the rear control plate to get to the the batteries (plural - it's an 18V system). As Bartolini electronics don't eat batteries as badly as some other systems, this is not a deal breaker, but if you're in the middle of a gig and the batteries start to die you're still screwed. I guess the only remedy is to stay on top of it and change batteries frequently, but in doing that you risk stripping out the control plate screw holes sooner or later..

All in all, I am extremely happy with this bass, even with my complaints, and I expect to get much good use out of it. Given their price and fairly constant availability on the used market, I think the Q6 is a great buy, and if it fits your needs it's one of the best choices in a 6-string at any price.
