Recently played this bass on an outdoor jazz gig in a duo with a pianist. The rig was the EA Wizzy powered by an EA iAMP 500.
The bass has a very warm, clear tone. I won't go so far as to say it sounds like a DB but it sounds far less like an EUB than some of the others I've encountered, in particular the NSDesign CRM4 I previously owned. The hollow body and the bass bar seems to impart a certain "roundness" to the sound but it retains the clarity and immediacy one is used to hearing with an EUB. It's not as punchy, per se, as a Steinberger but it seems to respond to walking/swing playing more like a real DB.
Arco tone is very, very good. No raspiness and very dynamic and responsive.
The preamp is versatile and while I haven't had a chance to delve into midi possibilities (and frankly may never!), the native tone from the bridge and preamp is quite clear and lacking peakiness.
Through the superb little EA rig, the bass sounded frankly wonderful. The neck is modeled after my old WW2 Kay M1 and it's fast and easy to play. Some technique adjustment is required, of course, when one approaches thumb position work as the body doesn't feel the same as a real DB and the neck joins at a somewhat different place relative to the fingerboard.
All in all, I found the bass a joy to gig: easy to haul, load in/out and perfectly serviceable in the tone department thanks to the excellence of the electronics and Pete Hanewinckel's meticulous building skills.
