GIG -
Medium/small blues bar in Costa Mesa, CA. Wide, open room with a bar in the middle and a raised wooden stage facing a dance floor and booths/tables. 4 full sets with my regular rock trio, The Funky Blue Monkeys.
RIG -
Euphonic Audio CXL310 driven by an older Sylmar SWR SM-900. GHS Progressive, medium-gauge strings. No effects. 900 was EQ'd separately for fingerstyle and slap tone and triggered by footswitch.
SOUND -
Punchy, clear and resonant. Fingered-harmonics ring and there's no sign of deadspots on the multi-lam 7-piece neck (no surprise). Sustain is impressive, especially for a bass that's this punchy. The Aguilar preamp has an almost passive tone set flat and needs a low-mid and bass boost to really come to life. It reminded me at times of the custom Bart sound of the MTD preamps. The Bart J pickups have plenty of bottom and are very smooth (but not cutting, particularly) on top. This bass is at its best fingerstyle but it's a respectable, although by no means the ultimate, slapper's bass.
PLAYABILITY, FIT AND FINISH -
One of the fastest (if not THE fastest) 4 I've ever played. The neck is just butter; it seems to play itself. The smooth oil finish on the neck is like silk and the gorgeous Pau Ferro board has an almost burnished feel to it. Body contours are comfortable and the bass hangs perfectly on a strap. The light weight makes for one of the most comfortable gigging instruments I've yet encountered. Workmanship is unexcelled, in my experience. Every detail has been attended to with obsessive care and the result is pretty much a perfect creation from a fit/finish perspective.
COMPARISONS -
* Hanewinckel Vintage Retro 4
This bass has a 3-band Bartolini preamp and features a maple neck with maple board, along with a solid ash body. It's got more life in the upper register and a bit more snap for slap playing. The neck is not as fast, however, and it's not quite as punchy as the Pro.
* Modulus VJ4
No contest. The Hanewinckel is WAY lighter, easier to play and beats the Modulus in every significant tone category you might care to invoke. The Modulus is more compressed, OTOH, and might cut through slightly better at times in a band situation. The Hanewinckel is just as punchy.
SUMMARY -
This is a beautifully made, wonderful sounding bass. It's a complete pleasure to play and will cover just about any style. I'm trying very hard to imagine a better 4; I can't.

This bass now sports Adder Plus passive J pickups and an Audere Multi-Z preamp. The differences are not subtle. The passive sound is in another range entirely when compared to the weak output of the original Barts (Barts are just not hot enough for a good passive sound given my preferences). And the new preamp runs circles around the Aguilar. One of the things I REALLY like is the 3-position Z toggle. It goes from a fat, warm Low Z to a nicely balanced Mid Z and a sizzling top end High Z. The addition of low and high mid pots really allows you to tweak the sound, too. This bass has really come alive. I liked it before; I LOVE it now!
