I think I\'d rate it a 9.5 if that was an option...
The Cirrus is an awesome 35\" scale, neck-thru bass you can find for under $1000 USD. I recently got this one in a trade. It is the walnut top version. The first thing I like about it is the low action and the excellent playability. It is an all oil-finish bass (including back of neck) and top-notch woods were used in the construction. My only grip (as noted by another reviewer) is that the knobs are rubber and seem out of place. I replaced these knobs with gold ones to match the bridge on the Cirrus I used to have. The bridge is a little weird but highly adjustable. You can even adjust between-string spacing a tiny bit. The body is very thin and light.
I love the sound - different than most other basses I\'m familar with. The Cirrus has a real hi-midrange punchy, hi-fi sound. The pickups and preamp seem of good quality. I usually boost mids on my amp, but not with this bass because it is naturally punchy (with its eq set flat). This is a good bass for stuff like progressive metal when you want to cut through with a modern tone.

This bass is a very finely crafted work of art. Tiger Eye finish with headstock veneer to match. VFL pickups are super quiet with a unique tone of their own. No other bass I have sounds close to this. The neck is superb in birdseye maple and a good radius. String spacing is good too. Wokmanship is top notch . Have recorded with it and am very pleased. Buy one !

This Bass is HONESTLY the BEST Bass I have ever played !! The spacing between the strings is great for slapping .... The sound you can get from this animal is like no other Bass I have ever had. I have played everything from Fender, Warwick, Tobias, Music man, Ibanez, you name it I have played it . This Bass absolutely blew me away !! The low action on the strings the sound of the on board EQ the feel of the neck. This Bass Is amazing!!!! The only thing I dont like about it is the rubber knobs.. They look Funny. I changed mine to gold knobs to match the other hardware.

This Bass is a players dream. Low action and great spacing of the strings make this a great Bass for everything from slapping to rock n roll !! The onboard EQ is phenominal . You can really fine tune your sound. The only drawback in this Bass is that it is 18 volt p/ups so you go through 2 - 9 volt batteries at a clip. They last about a month. The other thing is the knobs are black rubber . I changed them to gold to match the hardware.

Fretless model, with lines.
A very feature-packed bass, especially for the price, and especially from Peavey. Not so much known for awesome basses until this thing came out.
(note: I have the original, not the BXP model, which this review does not pertain to)
I really love the shape of the body on this guitar. It's very small relative to the size of the bass - deep cutaways. I think this make it look very nice. I can't stand the Fender P-bass and its big dumb clunky body.
I like the rubber knobs. They have a detent at their half-way point that helps as a reference (Except for the volume knob, I think).
I can't see myself ever going back to a fretted bass. This is my first fretless. I love the tone. I was worried for a while that I wouldn't be able to get that bright punchy slap sound from it (think Seinfeld), but all those worries went away when I got my Ampeg SVT-2 Pro (first amp of my own of the twelve years of playing bass). Previously I had mostly been playing through the house system.
But I digress. The Pau Ferro fingerboard is very nice. It has only minor impressions from the roundwound strings I used for years. I finally switched to flats, and I can't see myself going back anytime soon. If you like roundwounds - go ahead and use 'em. The wear is not excessive.
Oh yeah, about the problem: the "C" inlay at the twelfth fret has some filler around it to make it nice and flush with the fingerboard, and there's this _one_ little spot where they didn't put enough filler in or whatever and so there's a little gap that does not affect playability.

If you got this for under $1000, then this must be the lower-end Cirrus "BXP" model (with lower-quality electronics and construction). All the good quality Cirrus basses I've seen are closer to $2500 (see this link). Can you please clarify which one (BXP or not) you are reviewing?

This is a very high quality bass. As my first Five string I found that it had awsome sound for the price.
Two things I hate to say against this bass was its Higher tone which some people may enjoy and the neck was sticky from the finish.
Besides these things I find this bass awsome!

I HAVE OWENED 4, STILL HAVE 1, MY MAIN BASS!!
I HAVE BEEN PLAYING PRO FOR 20 YEARS, AND HAVE OWNED AND USED MANY NICE BASSES(MTD, ROSCOE, STINGRAY'S,ZON,ETC.) I CAN ALWAYS COME BACK TO MY OLD RELIBLE.
AS FAR AS THE RUBBER KNOBS GO, THEY DON'T BOTHER ME.
IN MY OPINION, IF THAT IS THE ONLY GRIPE PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT THIS BASS, THEN CHANGE THEM.
I HAVE USED THIS BASS ON COUNTRY, CLASSIC AND MODERN ROCK GIGS, AND OPEN JAMS THAT I HAVE HOSTED AND IT ALWAYS DOES THE JOB!
IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT GETTING ONE, DO IT.

best value for the all the options

Cons:

low resale, some minor quality conotrol issues, not the greatest neck profile

I have several of these guys and am pretty satisfied. I also have several Millennium basses. They are my work horses. The only other basses I own feature options that aren't available from Peavey, otherwise I'd play 100% Peavey USA models.
I run my EQ flat and never leave my bass plugged in and the batteries seem to last for years.
They have their own tone, which is unique and seems to work with most types of music. Running direct-in makes for some easy recording work.
The action is nothing short of amazing. It's hard to find a bass that can fret tap like this.
The neck profile is pretty nice on the 4-5 strings, but I'd be hesitant to order a 6 for fear it might be a shade too bulky and uncomfortable. In my book, anything bigger than a 19mm 5 definitely needs a comfortable profile or you risk hand fatigue.
Their custom shop is nice, but can be a pain to deal with and a shade on the unorganized side. Their price is is awesome, but most luthiers have much better customer service and attention to detail.

I own a translucent Red, Flame maple-top w/ gold hardware Cirrus 5 USA model (NOT the cheaper BXP...). I totally dig this bass, and, like my old Dyna-Bass from my High School years, will more than likey use this instrument as my main, fretted electric bass. I've been playing professionally for 20 years, and like the above posts, have owned/played just about every brand out there...and for moi the Cirrus wins hands down.
Low action, silent PU's (in which the radius of the PU cover matches the radius of the FB...very F-Bass-esque!), great looking and comfortable body (either sitting or standing with strap on), great hi-end sound (more closely comparable to Fodera, MTD, F-Bass, imho). Add to this an average price of under 1K on the used market, and you've got a winner.
Just my two cents. Ciao for now...

Good pre, not great - can be updated for under $75 from Peavey

Peavey Cirrus basses are amongst the best un the $1000-and-under category.
I've owned a 6 string and my current 5 string (traded the 5 for the 6, back to the original owner).
Love the bass. Love the different wood options. Love the sound of the pickups and the instrument itself.
I really love the craftsmanship of the instrument. Low action and a great great neck are synonymous with the Cirrus line.
You can update the preamp for Peavey's top-of-the-line for under $75 which puts the bass way over the top... A great bass transformed into an incredible one.
If you can pick up a Cirrus do yourself a favor and just do it

I own 3 of the Peavey Cirrus USA models. 1) 5 string Blue trans., 2) 5 string Red trans. and 3) 4 string Blue trans.. I've been playing variations of rock and metal in a semi-pro capacity for 20 years and have played Ibanez, Modulus, Jackson, Edwards, Tobias, Carvin and Parker basses. The fact that I have 3 USA Cirrus basses is a testimony in itself. Great necks for speed and comfort - I love the unfinished feel. They all boast a high quality build with a 5 piece through the body design and deliver fantastic tone - I am so impressed with the tone that I contacted Peavey and purchased two VFL humbuckers for a non-Peavey bass! My current project is prog-power metal in which I switch from fingers to pick (often in the same song)..the clear but seamless tonal change from one to the other is superior to any of my other basses (excluding the Parker Fly Bass 5) which I attribute to the active electronics as opposed to active PU's. I'll be honest here: I record with the Parker Fly 5 because NOTHING beats a Parker's tone, but for live reproduction, my Peavey's are my workhorses tuned to E, Eb and Eb respectively. I flat-out love these basses. You can't touch another bass of this quality for under $2K. I purchased the 5 strings on eBay for $900 and $950 NEW old stock. I paid an even $1000 for the 4at a local dealer. Funny...I told myself that would never own Peavey equipment again - I THOUGHT that I had out grown Peavey - I moved away from Peavey Bass amps and cabs (which in all fairness were inexpensive, had fair tone and could be abused and still work) as soon as I could afford to do so for higher quality amps and cabs. My guitarist made me try one of these basses (the 4 string) during a band field trip to several music stores...I bought it on the spot!!!!!
2 cons: A) The battery compartment is not a quick access clip/catch style door; it is set with 2 screws. The advantage to Peaveys choice is two-fold: the screw style is sturdier (no moving parts) and is dead flush to the body. I have owned these basses for sometime now and have yet to change the batteries since I installed a new one in each bass immediately upon getting it, so the door is a very small issue. B) My 4 string came with quality black METAL knobs - both 5's came with cheap rubber...a damn shame that Peavey tops off a great, quality bass with cheap knobs...thus the reason for a 9 out of 10 - I just feel that Peavey dropped the ball on going with cheap knobs. Note: I swapped all 10 knobs (2 basses X 5knobs) out for black metal for $50 and now these basses are just about perfect.
TRY ONE!

I own 2 Peavey American made Cirruses. One 4stg walnut and a 5stg maple. You cannot get any bass in this price range that has the features this has. Hell better than most High end basses although some would put a 2400.00 retail price tag as high end.
I have had bass players hear my tone and play these basses and within 10 seconds of playing it their old school opinion of Peavey was reversed. It simply kills EVERYTHING in its price range for a modern bass.
