Pros: Extremely high quality, flawless instrument
Cons: Small body style

This bass is another great example of the fantastic quality of a custom bass crafted by Matt Schmill at FBB Custom Bass Works. I came upon this bass in a trade deal and couldn't believe my good fortune at finding such a gorgeous bass!

This may be one of the very best recording jazz basses I have ever owned. The tonal quality of the axe is clean, clear, and distinct, with a nicely rounded out bottom end while still maintaining that great jazz attack. The bass is equipped with Aero pick-ups (apparently a modification from the original bart's), which also provide a clear, modern tone. I love the passive sound I get with this instrument, it really allows the beautiful bacote and mahogony woods to sing.

The neck is typical FBB .... smooth as glass and well suited to your hand. I can, and have, played this bass for hours at a time with zero hand fatigue. String spacing is 18mm, not quite as wide as a standard Fender. But since I have been playing FBB's that 18mm "standard" has really become comfortable for me. Plus, the headstock is another funky FBB shape ... I'm really liking that none of the headstocks match, especially from this time period (the bass was built in 2000), it's as if Matt kind of designs the headstocks to suit the balance of each bass individually.

For me, the only downside is the size of the body. It is quite a bit smaller than any bass I have ever owned and, in truth, isn't all that comfortable for me when standing. My other FBB's have larger bodies and fit me like a glove (I'm 6'5" and 270 pounds). When seated, the bass is very comfortable. I assume that a great many other players would really like this body size/style, but it just doesn't do it for me.

But that is the only downside to this axe. It is a stunning example of the extraordinary quality of FBB. I can not begin to express my tremendous satisfaction with both the basses and the builder. I've said it before and I'll repeat it here, Matt Schmill has a customer for life !!
