I had these pups installed in a new MK21 4-string bass built by Mike Kinal. It has a Bartolini pre-amp as well. Have been playing it for at least three years now. Was the original owner of a 69 Fender Precision that I used for more than 15 years so I have a solid sense of what these things should sound like. And I like these pups very much. Bartolini has been criticized for describing these pups as having "more air" but I understand their dilema. They are actually correct. The pup is not thick or dark or heavy. I hesitate to say bright because they are not thin or edgy. They are very musical and harmonically rich with a light and open quality. Playing my bass through my SWR sm400s it can sound a little thin but through my Aguilar db 359 it sounds warm, rich and delightfully musical. Heavy rockers probably won't like this pup, but funk, pop and jazz players will love it.

Woolysock, I know you're post is a couple of years old now, but I'm looking for a P replacement that has the P characteristics but with more... 'cutting' attack.
I'm hesitant to say 'bite', cos I know someone will tell me to add a J.
Would it be fair to say the Bart still sounds 'piano-like' - similar to my Fender stock?
I'm not so keen on a Quarter Pounder SPB-3 cos from what I've heard of them, they seem to boost more hi-mid than treble. I'm looking at clearer freqs around 10kHz. Any thoughts?
I'd much appreciate the help
