I own more expensive basses than this one, but quality-wise, it is their equal. The P/J configuration does what you would expect and lends versatility not expected for an entry-level bass. The neck is very thin, back of the neck is satin-finished making it very fast. Fretwork is absolutely astounding for the price-range. All hardware is bullet-proof with a nice thick bridge. I can find no fault with this one and only wish I had bought it in a 5 string version. The look of the body is very reminiscient of a Lakeland, not by accident, I'm sure and the headstock is attractive as well. I'll keep it around just because I like it, unless someone wants to trade me a Freeway 5 for it. It doesn't eat anything and it's paid for.

Well I still have mine and love it, but alas, there comes a time when you need to grow up and face the music. This is a great beginners bass, and recomend it to anyone who is just starting or to teachers. the PJ setup lets you figure out what type of sound you like in a bass, minus my favourite the good ol humbucking sound. but one problem, is the pickups, they're not that great stock. sure this could be fixed by just buying a new set, but these ones were really hot, impossible to get a clean sound while recording.
The fretboard seems to have an odd film on it to after a couple years of play that has become all gunky... if that's a word.
I really don't recommend the 5-string version, as i tried it, but the B is way too muddy (havent tried it on the new active versions though). all in all though, she's a good little girl to get started on. PLus it's Canadian, how can you not like it

I picked up this bass as a tool to help me return to playing after a time. I needed a good quality instrument at a price point that wouldn't cause me concern. I went with Godin because I'm familiar with their products, and again I've been rewarded in that effort with a better than imagined result. I've made some changes to suit my personal tastes but I can find nothing wrong with the original. I would recommend it for what it is. Excellent utility, backup, or student bass, and cant' be beat at this price level, period.

Okay, not too sure where I went wrong trying to post this review earlier - I think I hit 'post reply' instead of 'post review'. Either way, it disappeared ... so, here we go again.
***
This is a near flawless bass for the money. In fact it's astonishing that something of Canadian/US parts and construction can be available so cheap. Given the all-round quality, it's not a beginner's bass - although it could easily be bought as one - and although it may not have the 'it' factor to make it anybody's dream bass (of course, maybe it does), it could easily be used as a primary gigging/recording instrument.
When I was given this as a gift by a good mate, he'd been using it as his primary gigging and recording bass for a few years and during that time had replaced the 'P' pup with a Seymour Duncan Basslines Quarter Pounder. What surprised me is that the stock Godin 'J' pup isn't overwhelmed at all by the SD. They're both hot and compliment each other nicely.
Pilonian's review said that his Freeway was impossible to record; well that certainly hasn't been the case with this one. It's an all-maple instrument with hot (passive) pups, so yes it's very 'modern' sounding and possibly best suited for rockier settings, so no surprise that the previous owner got some great picked alt.rock sounds out of it on his band's EPs and demos (using both the original and replacement pup), but I've used it on several soundtrack projects in varied styles (from folk to metal) as well as a couple of heavy blues and fusion demos etc., and it's been up to the job every time.
Acoustically the neck can sound quite 'rattly' (I'm using very light strings and a low action) but plugged in, all's well. The 'through-body or through-bridge' design is great, but I found that standard Roto long-scales aren't actually long enough for through-body! The cloth-wraps ended up on the fretboard just before the nut ... so that's something to watch out for. Tonally, however, I found very little difference - if any - between the two options.
I'd say that this is an excellent workhorse which - due to the high standards of construction and materials, as well as the fact that it's a pretty good looking beast (small, distinctive body, cool Tele-variation headstock) - has every chance of maturing into a vintage gem.

Great Neck, Quality materials, affordable, comfortable, String though or bridge. Tone.

Plain looking. This is an excellent tool but not flashy by any stretch of the imagination

This is my sole PJ bass. The neck is asymetrical, thin and solid. Variety of tones through pick-up adjustment. Silverleaf maple body has nice tiger grain pattern. Nice alternative to my Gibson with HH. Most comfortable bass in my stable and a go to bass for practice/noodling.
