TFB550 on steroids

OK....let's get this out of the way. I am a Thunderfunk endorser. I do not receive any type of compensation from Dave nor do I get free stuff. Also, I don't care what kinda deal I'm offered, I'm not gonna use gear if I can't get a sound I like...period. I used the TFB550B until recently and have upgraded to the 750. An it is indeed an upgrade.
In brief, the 750 is a significant improvement over the TFB550. It has all the midrange punch that the 550 offers, but the low end girth is much more substantial and the high end is less subdued.
I would not (as some have said) say that it sounds like a whole other amp, rather it sounds like an extension of the 550. Imagine taking the characteristic tone of the 550 but un-compressing the low end (not completely; it still retains a bit of that Thunderfunk compressed low end which is what yields that characteristic "tightness") by a healthy margin and increasing the clarity on the high end (again, not completely...it still has the somewhat attenuated character the 550 has, but MUCH less so.)
The feeling of power and headroom is much more substantial as well. There were times when I was using my 550 around 7 or so on the input gain (with main volume kept wide open) and it was "enough" but there were occasions when laying hard into a low D for example that it felt like the amp was handling it...but just barely. It's hard to verbalize, but it had a quality of "That's about it...don't ask for any more" whereas I never got that feeling with the 750. The feeling of immense power reserves is palpable.
I also find that I'm using the EQ actually less...as in I'm running the amp flatter than the 550 and it's working better that way.
Still warm and punchy as is Thunderfunks' character but just more. Quite a bit more. Of course it also costs a fair amount more as well. I think for an amp in its' performance league it's priced fairly but the inevitable question is:
Is it enough of an improvement to justify the price difference?
Or put another way: Should I buy a used 550 or a new 750?
It depends on what you're doing. If you are in situations where you really need that power and headroom....loud rock bands or some other situation similar or you may not have PA support (or you're like me and also freelance and never know exactly what to expect so you need to be able to cover everything); then yes....it is worth it.
OTOH, if I was playing your typical bar scene or some such situation or where the amp is nothing more than a near-field monitor for you to hear yourself, then you would probably be perfectly happy with a 550. I know I was and never felt a NEED for the 750, but now that I have it I ain't lettin' go of it!
It's kind of like the first time you get a microwave oven or a cell phone. You never knew you "needed" it; then once you get it you can't imagine how you lived without it.
