Pros: Light Weight with Short Scale
Cons: Limited Control of Tone

I am not a huge Beatles fan and I didn't get "Paul's bass" to look like him! But I am huge fan of the sound of this bass!

In a word, the sound of the Hofner is "punchy". Because of the hollow body design, the '"Beatle Bass" has a nice sound with a fast smooth response that drifts away just like an acoustic instrument. The short scale (30") seemed small at first, but I eased right into it. Chords are easy to grasp, even in first position. The neck is slim and smooth, but without a cut-away, the higher frets are stretch to reach. Also, without dots on the side of the neck, you have to know where you are on the frets... just use your ear instead.

The tone controls are somewhat limited, but that's OK due to the acoustic characteristics. The neck and bridge pickups can be independently adjusted. I noticed that the intonation drifts sharp as you get into the higher registers. I haven't figured out how (or if) the bridge can be adjusted for this (minor) observation. The thing came with flat wound strings, and they really feel slick under finger. I like that. The 62 re-issue has 'strip tuners' (E and A string on one strip, D and G on another), but they work smoothly.

The overall look of the bass is, in a word, cool. A violin shaped body fits well on the knee, and makes no difference hanging on a strap, but it doesn't have top strap button, so you need to tie the strap onto the bass. No problem, since the thing is designed to be this way. The bass seems 'fragile', due it's light weight, but that is an illusion given the very high quality of construction.

I got a really good price on this instrument. At $1499, you could opt for several other really great basses. But it wouldn't be "Paul's bass" -- and no other bass sounds like the Beatles!

I love it, yeah, yeah yeah!
