Welcome to Talkbass! Well, far as I can tell, all Fender logos are black and plastic knobs are pretty normal. I like speed knobs personally---you know---with the numbers---as it can actually tell you a setting you can always return to or keep it at.

My guess is the 'made in mexico' part means it is probably a made in mexico (MIM) bass...

I found this link on the fender forums. Start at the third post:
    http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=50979

The serial number seems to date it as a Mexican Made instrument from 1996-1997.

Looks legit based on the info above, unless I my chimp-brain processed it wrong.

Ryan, welcome ... congrats on your first post ...

Even though it says Fender, its still a Squier .. thats a nice twist on an old saying around here

.. its also a nice twist on the 'what is it worth?' without a blue oval ...

Ryan, you did good ... but you need to stop listening to the people that are telling you things like "if it says Fender its a Squier"

No, it is not a Squire. It is a MIM Fender.

This is from Keith Brawley who was/is a VP at Fender

There you have it. You can get great deals on these simply because of the word Squire on it.

... umm, but OP's bass does not have the word Squire (or even Squier) on it ... probably because it is not a Squier Series ... this would be a Fender Black Label Traditional Series ... unless somebody was very smooth with their steel wool, but it didnt look like it ...

This also confused me. The grain looks consist...I.e no sanding at least from what I can see.

Looks like a "black label" MIM Fender to me. I'm no expert but would snatch that up in a second for $200.

Very true. but it does look like it has the single ply pickguard and plastic knobs that were on the black label Squier series. So maybe the Squier Series mark was removed.

BUT! After looking again at the headstock and serial number, the serial is MN6 which would indicate 1996-97 (According to Fender)
    http://www.fender.com/support/articles/mexican-instruments-product-dating/

That would put it past the production dates of the Squier series which I believe were only made in 1994-95

My Squire Series P bass has a MN4 serial from 94-95

So OPs bass would probably be a MIM traditional and probably easily worth the $200 asking price.
