On my Fender Custom Shop '55 P basses, I've had both the '50s C (or U?) chunky shaped, and the Soft-V neck profiles, but I would like to know what is the 'correct' neck shape, period wise?

Was the Soft-V introduced only in 57?

Just want to clear out what was the profile for a '55 P.

    Thanks

    57 was a hard V.
    56 was a softer V
55 to me was more U shape.
The CS Neck is more C shape.

Hmmm thanks for the info!! Very cool.

I'm wondering what is the difference between the 56 soft and 57 harder V ...

I've had a CS '55 P that was what I beleive to be 'soft-v' and loved that profile. For some very bad reasons, I sold that bass. As I regretted it, I bought a new one, but this one has not the same neck profile. It's more like a big C, but with a little V (soft) at the first frets... Strange profile, never had a bass like that.

While it's perfectly playable, I think I prefered the Soft-V.

What's the difference between the soft and hard V? I mean, can I see a cutout of both somewhere on the net?

My CS 55 has the fat neck with a soft V. It is identicle to a real '56 I A/B played it against.

Soft V all the neck or only the first frets?

    OH! Just like mine...

And then, it's really more like C ... Right?

My 55 Custom shop Precision has the soft v profile. It has the v for the first 5 or 6 frets and then is C shaped. It's a very comfortable C, not at all fat like my '69 Tele bass.

Those of you who owns a CS '55, do your string retainers are flush with the back of the bass, or a little recessed?

I owned an original 56 w/ a deep V. Loved the feel of the V contour so replicated it on a couple Warmoth necks.

Thanks for the info, same as my 2012.

My previous one had them flush to the wood... It was a 2011.

Did Warmouth make them special order for you? They wouldn't admit to making custom bass neck profiles when I called them a while ago.

I have a vintage '55. I'll post the pics I have here. If you need more, describe them, and I'll see it I can help. I am recovering from ankle nerve surgery, so new pics are possible, but will take a little extra time.

No, I did the contour myself as part of a makeover that should be complete this weekend.
