I owned a '75 jazz RI, and did not like the neck. Seemed too thin front to back. I've owned a few Geddy's and thought the neck felt about the same. All of the '62 RI's I've owned have been fine.

How does the '74 neck compare? Is it thicker front to back?

    Thanks.

The 74 RI neck is super thick. It is more chunky than any actual 70s Jazz Bass I have ever played, and I have played a few in my time. If you like chunky, then it is the bass for you.

Yes the '74 AV has a pretty chunky neck, especially compared to the '75 AVRI.

And from my point of view,I like the Geddy L and '75's neck, but did not care for the '74.

So if you like a chunkier neck, you would probably love the '74.

Just got a '74 AVRI, and I can vouch for the above comments. Very nice, thick neck.

Thanks for the replies. Is the bridge pickup further towards the bridge, like the '75?

They may as well have used a Louisville Slugger for the neck on the '74 AVRI. Cool though.

  7. "Significant changes were afoot in 1974 for the Jazz Bass®. The bridge pickup had been moved about half an inch closer to the bridge only the year before"

You can see from the picture that the bridge pickup is covered by the chrome pickup covers. 60's spacing would stick out.

I honestly think that the chunkier necks is part of the 70s tone.

    I'm sure it kicks booty.
I prefer my 4s have a some meat to them like the 70's Fenders.
I still prefer 1.5 at the nut but like the fuller profile.
    You really can hear it.

You really can hear the difference in the 74 to the 75. meatier plus the pups are new and better. the 74 sounds smooth even vintage and great! I was so impressed with it. I didnt think I was going to like it as much as my 75 that I love....but its really really nice...I see why they are more money!

    Pm me details basswave

Local GC had a '74/rosewood. I was quite shocked by the neck. Chunky, but gave me the impression it was thinner than 1.5" nut width. I did not get to spend much time with it, but I am going to go back. They also had a '64, and Am Std. Will be cool to compare the 3.
