I ordered a full sheet of this abalone celluloid to make a couple of pickguards. It has to be one of the gaudiest things I've ever seen

Here it is as a pickguard:

It has the most green of any abalone pattern I've seen, and there are bonus "evil clown faces" in parts of it (if you are as prone to pareidolia as I am ;))

I think it will look fantastic on here:

    WAAAY cool! Congrats!

One thing, tho.....I read something online about celluloid guards on old Hofner violin basses outgassing and ruining the chrome on brand new basses hanging on a wall! I didn't bookmark the story, but it can probably be found with a Google search. I don't know if this is even an issue with modern materials, but coming from China....?

You might want to look into it.

All true celluloid does that. It's the volatile nature of the material. Celluloid is only being made in China now because the process is so unfriendly. Highly flammable to the point of being explosive.

I kind of like it because it's different. My first though was that it would look great on a green bass.

I was looking at this very material, myself. Full size, the pattern is a little more symmetrical (containing straight lines, I mean) than I had hoped, but still pretty nice looking. I was thinking it would look amazing on a Surf Green body.

I like it- I lived in a house built in 1930 that had a green MOP toilet seat. Awesome

There are evil clown faces in the pattern! There is one wearing a top hat on the upper right. Really creepy! :)

To make the SR5 pickguard, the 'guard has to be pitched 30 degrees on the blank. I'm hoping that distracts from any symmetry in the pattern.

We need to know more about your diet, if that's what your vomit looks like. This could be a medical emergency.

I'm guessing lots of raw green leafy vegetables and legumes with that mix.

Hey solderjunkie, please post process pics of you making the pickguard and a how-to if you have the time, it looks like a fascinating bit of DIY.

I consider it a 'stretch' for the manufacturer to call it abalone, but I agree that it will look cool on mister green bass.
