I'm thinking about getting an acoustic bass. I owned a Michael Kelly Firefly a long time ago and remember it being a fairly decent instrument for what I paid for it (around $300 if memory serves). I'm back in the market and was hoping to get some ideas about what to look at and what to avoid in the $300 - $500 ballpark.

I know Carvin had a line of acoustic basses a few years ago. Anyone know anything about them?

That is a great deal on the Breedlove at TPB. Add in the TB discount on top of that and consider the hardshell case and free shipping and I think you have the winner in your search for a new acoustic.

    What TB discount?
  8. My guess would be that you get a discount for being a TalkBass member.

Ibanez make some decent acoustics. The AEB8E has an onboard preamp, onboard tuner, and XLR out - their other models would be similar. It's also 32", which is nice under the fingers. Plugged in it has has a great 'pillowy' tone that sits in the mix nicely, just like a high quality P-Bass.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in...
  13. Got mine ordered. They sold a bunch today so if you're on the fence, the clock is ticking.
  14. I'd go for the fretless BTW, better than fretted on an acoustic bass …

    Just saying

Are those kinds of basses fairly easy to intonate?

Not much to play around with on the bridge end really.......

And because of the body you'd be limited on string selection right?

I did play Fender's model in a store a while back and it sounded not too bad.......

The Fender acoustic I played a few months back felt very awkward and neck-heavy. Sounded OK, but the weight distribution was very bad.

    I love my Washburn AB40SH.
