Another evening of uninspired plunking from Mr. Clayton. That said, what was the pretty green bass he was playing on top of 30 Rock?

Green Fender J with matching headstock and Pearloid PG I think. Looked very nice.

    Yes indeed.
He's probably made more in one year than I'll make in my entire life (barring a lottery win, of course).
And I do like a fair amount of U2's music, so respect given where it is due.

Yes.....the bass is at the heart of U2, since other than the drums, the rhythm is all bass in their music, and the guitar is shimmering, thin accents, light on chords.

Anyone know what acoustic bass he was playing near the end of the show?

Yea I'm pretty sure Adam could give a rat's hoot that some guys on Talkbass think his bass playing is poor or uninspired

In the rooftop performance I believe Adam was miming to a recorded bass track. I noticed some discrepancies between what was played and what he was actually doing. Looked like an old martial arts flick to me. It also looked like he faked his way through the acoustic bass routine for looks. I'm wondering if it is one of Fallon's.

So are we going to have a Flea-inspired Adam Clayton backlash now?

On the original question, I would figure that if he's buying a Fender bass, the custom shop is probably building it however he wants.

I hate U2. I change the radio station the microsecond one of their songs come on. But Clayton's playing fits the music perfectly. In fact, his bass playing defines most of that band's biggest hits.

    Fully agree.
I wonder if OP is willing to post some recordings of his playing for others to review. Also, I bet Adam's bank account is a little bigger too. Just sayin.

I like this description and agree that their sound is bass dependent as mentioned here because of the guitar's role coupled with the fact that they're essentially a 3 piece if Boner doesn't play. Clayton is an excellent example for me to emulate as I overplay and the sound of the group suffers as a result.

I actually like Adam's playing and what he brings to the music, just what the song requires. I was just disappointed to see what looked like a bogus performance.

Adam does what needs to be done and isn't interested in over-doing it (like many bassists who are more concentrated on doing a "look-at-me! Look-at-me!" performance). Some musicians believe that they are somehow half-assed if they don't do something complicated. Simplicity (within reason) is an artform that many just can't do.

Geez, this tired debate again... Like the man asked: What was the bass? Very pretty.
