i dont necessarily want a boutique bass, per se, but something more vintage-inspired. Can anyone name any companies/luthiers that can give me exactly what I want, for somewhere in the price range of 3-5k??

    Thanks,

Carvin, either the P-bass or Jazz bass copy they make to spec. And for much less than 3K.

Sadowsky NYC basses are custom built or they may have one that meets your needs in stock.

Valenti Basses builds all custom stuff.

Mike Lull also does vintage inspired custom stuff.

Thats just off the top of my head, I'm sure there are tons more.

Chris Stambaugh can do anything you want for way under $3k. Or even under $2500.

    Same thing with Andrew Drake.

I'd add Nordstrand to this, and call it about good.
I've had some of each of these builders, and they're all top shelf.

I was always told that custom basses are often a bit more pricey when you get more out of actual companies. Were these people wrong? It always kept me from getting a super 6 string custom bass with my spec choices :crying:

If you might want a medium or short scale for well less than $2K, Jimmy Wilson is your man at Landing Bass:

Wilkins is awesome... you can save money but getting a Warmoth body and having him do a custom neck and custom finish. I did this a while back and it came to right around $1900 after pickups, preamp, hardware, assembly, finish, etc. And that was a fancy neck with fancy expensive block inlays.

ACG - it depends what you want exactly, but Alan certainly seems to be quite flexible if you're working from one of the standard body shapes (although there seem to be a few cases where elements of two different body shapes are blended).

As for your prices, it'd be well within that. Graft basses from £795, Custom Series from £1600.

I've got one of the Graft basses, which are only semi-custom, i.e. a choice of only three body shapes, two body woods (one with a choice of many different tops), two fretted fingerboard woods (plus a third option for fretless), three scale lengths, 4 or 5-string, three different pickup types, four different electronics options...

(You get a sense that the 'full custom' gives you most options you could imagine! )

G&L LB-100, JB or JB-2 are nice options. Classic, semi-custom, and you could get 2 or 3 for what you're willing to spend

Since you are thinking about a "vintage-inspired" type of bass, why not buy a top quality production bass to your liking and take it to a top notch luthier and have it "fine toothed". Mods and tweaks can be done to it too.

The same can be done with buying a body, neck, hardware, electronics. Assembling it yourself or having a qualified person assemble it and then take it to a luthier for complete nut, fret work and set up.

The end result will be the same as a custom made bass and much money can be saved.

Heh. Not exactly what I think of when I think affordable custom.
To me, an affordable custom is in the $1-3k range.

Affordable custom to you clearly means something else than it does to the original poster.
    Which is fine.
