As a late Christmas present from my girlfriend's father, I received an offer to "see any bass player in NYC". Essentially, he's offered to take us out to a gig of any bass player of note. A generous gift indeed!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew of any "big-name" bass players coming through NYC in the coming months that I should be aware of. Solo shows or as part of a band - either is fine.

Just as a word of note, don't let style of music get in the way of any suggestions - when I was just starting and was a big metal-head, my dad took me to a Michael Manring concert that totally blew my mind! The gf's dad and I are both pretty open to just about anything - though he tends to take us to excellent jazz gigs when he can (my first live experience of Christian McBride!)

No bass-centric gigs to recommend in New York? No way!

they are improvisational rock with elements of prog, metal, funk, blues, electronic, and pretty much just about anything. it is honestly pretty amazing.

Seen them a few times - GREAT band. Did not think to look in the jam-band direction.

Love me some Oz Noy, and Ron Carter's one of my favorites (wish I could play upright like that)!

+1 on Oz Noy with Will Lee and Keith Carlock, performing at The Bitter End this month and next.

A few years ago, I saw Will with Oz and Anton Fig on drums. It was a truly wonderful performance. I’ve seen Keith Carlock when he was touring with Steely Dan — a really talented player.
