Are there bass amps out there that have a speaker shut off when the di is used? If so, what is the purpose? I thought that the whole purpose of using your DI (at least in a live setting) was to use your amp as a monitor?

Maybe - but I know mine (Hartke LH1000) doesn't work that way.
The amp doesn't know if there's anything plugged into the DI out or not.

I agree with your question as asked - but I sense your real question is one you didn't ask...
