    These pickups are passive. They don't have internal amplifiers and therefore don't need a battery to operate. You can install them in a bass with or without an onboard preamp. The voltage requirement depends on the preamp that you choose.

    That said, I wouldn't recommend connecting 18V directly to the pickups - you'll definitely have a bad time. :)

    Ah...reason I asked is that the Carvin site seemed to suggest the bass these came from is an 18v passive/active.
