It looks like CVS is pulling the plug on tobacco sales; some customers are up in arms on their Facebook page, others are praising them. What do you guys think?

It's legal and people want it, but if the store doesn't want to carry it then so be it. Doing this for health reasons seems strange since I'm sure they're not ditching their candy.

  4. That's bad for business. 99% of COPD meds are because of tobacco. :bag:

I'm 36 days smoke free for the first time since I was 16, but if I still smoked, CVS wouldn't be getting my 12 bucks next time I bought a pack. Sucks for them.

Who buys their over priced smokes anyway?

That's really not a fair comparison. Candy doesn't kill half of the people who use it.

All hail the free market system. CVS can sell or not sell whatever the hell they want as long as it's legal, and reap the rewards/consequences.

Were I as cynical as I am, I'd say that the profit from selling cigarettes has dropped sufficiently far enough to make it worth the public relations bonus they'll get for doing it.

If I was as cynical as I am, that is.

I think that stores should be forced to carry products, even if they don't want to.

You're right. I looked it up. It's about 1/3 of all lifetime smokers who die because of a disease they contracted due to smoking. My bad.

You should think about that dodgy 'convenience store' with the metal grates on the windows down the street in every bad neighborhood.

I didn't say it was as bad, but it is bad. Sugar is bad for the heart, and obesity (which according to the media is an epidemic in the US) causes all kinds of health issues. It's hard to make an argument against cigarettes for health and not consider candy.

One of every 3 cancer deaths are directly related to cigarette smoking.
I watched my Dad die from cigarette smoking. They cut out half of his lung & it
    did not help him.
My buddy is fighting for his life now because of cigarette smoking.
    I praise CVS for it.

I can't tell if you're trying to start an argument or clueless. While not on the same scale they are both well known and publicly debated health issues, one person going nuh-huh on a forum does not change that.

lets not compare cigarettes to chocolate...

i think thats great. hopefully more places do it- they're turning down a lot of money in sales, for a good cause. more companies should take after their model..

and besides, smokers can buy cigarettes pretty much anywhere. within a 1 minute walk from my house there are 3 places i know sell cigarettes.
