I've read a few comments that Mike used Chromes on his 4001. Does anyone recall an interview where he states that?

I'll bite. It's my understanding that Mike (and Peter Buck as well) were Dean Markley string users from the beginning. To my knowledge, Mike used the Nickelsteel set gauged 105-50 for everything.

I knew that those are his current strings but didn't know they were in the 80's as well.

Looked it up said his fav strings were Dean Markley nickle steels. He played Dan Armstrong bass, switched to his Ric then to Fenders.

I remember early, and I mean first album early, his strings had red silk at the tuners but can't recall at the bridge. So I'm guessing either Rotosounds or GHS Boomers but I believe they, he and Peter, got an endorsement deal with Dean Markley fairly early in their careers. I think I recall the article you're talking about but I just remember Mike saying he used a bass, a P bass I think, strung with flats in the studio but I don't recall if he stated the brand. I've been an REM fan from beginning to end.
