    Hi,

I'm in a cover band and we're going to cover Bruno Mars - Locked Out Of Heaven.
I have the impression there's some kind of synth (or fuzz) thing going on in the chorus? Any advice on how to replicate this?
And maybe in the process I could gain a fun pedal to play with? :hyper:

I've just been playing it clean and letting my guitar players fill the space. Tried fuzz right of the gate but it seemed to be too much for the vibe of the tune. Experiment. Whatever works for your band is the right answer.

Well that's definitely a keyboard synth being faded in to replace the bass guitar but I think you can get close with a little bit of overdrive and a phaser.
I just bought a BEF from a guy here who still has a Boss Bass overdrive pedal for pretty cheap in the classifieds. Just fyi.

Also as Im thinking about it...Mars- like a majority of Hawaiian musicians- loves The Police and this song was inspired by them...which may explain why that synth sounds like the one used in "Dont Stand So Close To Me". Might be easier to listen to and match that synth and then add a sheen to it with phaser or vibrato.

We got 2 guitarists..and lots o harmonies so the chorus is friggin huge, especially compared to the rest of the song..

but as I writ this, I think our version is a blend of the original, and a heavy rock version that someone brought to the table.

so our version isnt quite metal, but its definately "rocked out" a bit... then again so our are versions of ldy gaga, katy perry ,jason durillo(sp?) ,addelle, FLO rida,Niki minaj, usher, Ne-yo, Ke$ha, karmin, Jessie J, one direction....etc..
    :bag:
It's for the ladies btw, and where the ladies are ..the guys show up too..(if that's your thing). ;)

We dont do ANY songs like the original.. they're all kinda rocked up a bit. I'm callin it "Top 40 Dance rock".

Oh yeah, my point was that we have distorted guitars filling alotta space..which can be a task considering MOST of the songs we play have ZERO guitars in the Orig recording.

    Carry on.

    And can I join it?

I simply can NOT get my guitards to understand that music that isn't originally guitar-based CAN be played on guitars.

It takes a lot more work. Sometimes it's worth it sometimes it's not. For every 5 dumb ideas we throw out there maybe 1 of them works but when they do they are instantly the crowds favorites. The biggest thing for me at least is that being a cover band we have one objective. Make girls dance. Women dance they stay, women stay guys show up then you have a party and a nice guarantee from the club.

I didn't know Hawaiian musicians loved the Police, but I use an overdrive when I hit the chorus. Currently using my Sans Amp BDDI.

Seems like people just dont get it, or maybe they hate new music soo much that they refuse to play it.

I LOVE it..call me a sell out ho. I give 'em what they want..and give it to 'em good.

    YMMV

Yep. Pop + reggae feel. Unrelated point: Earth Wind and Fire is almost considered family here.
