EMG 35-J pickups hum cancelling when used both wide open?

    Hi, everyone!

My question is all in the title.

I'm looking into replacing my EMG 35-P pickup with a 35-J pickup 'cause I need more brightness. That way I'll have two 35-J pickups on my bass and that should brighten up the sound for sure.

By the way, these pickups are housed in soapbar housings so there won't be any routing issues.

So I know EMGs are very quiet in terms of noise but I wanted to ask if using both pickups together at full volume will create the hum-cancelling effect in case there is a little hum.

    Thank you! :bassist:

I have a 40J in my 5 string that is totally hum free when wide open and soloed.

I can't imagine why it wouldn't be the same with a pair of them, or why you'd need them to hum cancel when they don't hum in the first place (at least in my experience)

What the above poster said. If you have EMGs that hum.. Get them replaced.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys!

I have one last question, please.

I can't seem to find any info about the tonal differences of Alnico, Ceramic and Ceramic + Steel magnet types.

    Which one's the brightest? lol
