I'm basing this thread off another one just posted, asking which brand of bass is your favorite. I'm curious, from the viewpoint of a player, and a small volume builder, which string spacing at the bridge that most players prefer on their five string basses?

For me, I prefer the Fender V format: 18mm spacing.

Some have said that 19mm feels a little too wide. Others have written that for slapping, 19 is perfect. I also notice that some gospel players seem to lean in that direction as well.

Whats your preference, and which bass do you play (assuming it has your favorite string spacing @ the bridge) ?

19mm is 'normal', anything less is narrow and is made for girly hands :)

    So 19mm for me!

18mm, but I have "girly hands" according to mmbongo.

I can play just about any spacing with no problems. My preference? 17.5.

EDIT: I have VERY short fingers.

The wider, the better for me.

Not only do I not have girly hands, but my main Modulus is 17mm and it is perfect spacing for me. I love the extremely tight narrow spacing. I guess my Fender Precision Deluxe 5'er has a 21mm string spacing which is probably why I don't play it very much. However, most of my 4 string basses that I have sport the 19mm.. So I guess I just overly confused myself

I prefer 19-20mm. It feels more familiar.

I open a thread asking for the string spacing for a Yamaha RBX 765A. I need a bridge for this one and can't find anything about the spacing. Any help will be good for me. Thanks.

What's the best spacing for metal?

But for real I'm fine with 17.5 but that's only because I've had to adapt my technique to the bass I own. If I could have it my way, 19mm

Good suggestion, however, I also asked for additional commentary i.e.; which bass you play.

Ditto. I default to 19mm but I also have huge, non-girly hands!

Alleva-Coppolo LM5 (70's style J) and Norstrand VP5 (80's style P). Both 'full' 19mm, which basically makes them feel like a standard 4 string with an 'extra string'. I prefer relatively wide spacing at the nut also. I also prefer 24" scale, although, again, can play pretty much anything with no problem.

I can pretty much play anything (except maybe that 20mm Yamaha Patitucci 6 string:eek:).
