I bought this in 1983 and it is exactly as I bought it. The body was painted before I got it. As you can see in some of the photos it used to be Lake Placid Blue. I have lots of photos. I will post some anybody want more please e-mail me direct. It has a bras nut and the bridge is a '70's one. The pups and pots are all correct. She plays and sounds just as she should.

    9.45 lbs.

$3500 Shipped and insured in the original case to continental USA

Thanks for all the e-mails I will get to them as soon as I can. I will take some photos of the frets too.The inside of the cease isn’t perfect the bass was a player as you can see from the back of the neck photos.
I only used it a few years in a Hendrix band in the mid 80’s then I moved to Florida and didn't play for years now i build my own and play 5 string fretless mostly. Here are some more photos

The body was painted green before I got it. As you can see in some of the photos it used to be Lake Placid Blue.

Looks like a nice bass - despite the blue showing through the metallic green respray (definitely a refinish, no paint stick shadow in the neck pocket), I'd guess this started out as a sunburst if that's the original pickguard.

The guard looks correct in the pics but there are probably some marks (scrawled letter) and discoloration on the back of the guard (sorta reddish/brown around the pickup cutout) that would let you know for sure.

Nevertheless - a very good price for a dot marker Jazz bass and a nice looking color as is or a good candidate for a refin.

An awesome dude, so someone will buy safely here. :)
I have seen some tortoise pickguards on lake placid blue jazz basses, but I have no idea whether those are aftermarket upgrades or not. I guess white pickguards were more common with the lake placid finishes.
We can only speculate why people would refinish a bass... But I guess we need to keep in mind that this is a player's instrument, and as such, the modifications were done to keep the instrument in the best shape possible. Plus... in 1972, a '66 Jazz wasn't that much of a commodity as it is today of course. I remember considering a 69 Jazz when I started out in 1984... but I went with a 81/82 P bass instead... vintage is something that happened later :D
Thinking of Jaco's Bass of Doom... there's hardly any other bass that deserves the name "Player's instrument" in the world... and it's not exactly pristine and unmodified either. :) It's even got laminate top and back to keep the body pieces together. So...
    I'm wandering off derailing here.

Just thought I should bump for Tom!
