I can understand how the amp and speaker modeling would be great for recording, but is it useful for live performances; i.e. is it colored by your own rig?

Yes, you can/will color the tone a bit more depending on your rig. I would use a Carvin BX500 (nearly colorless in my opinon) and either a Berg NV610 or GK Neo212, and the cabs would add their own coloration to the overall tone. Basically, you can achieve a ton of different tones, much more than just what's under the hood of the POD. The really nice thing, since the Berg and GK are quite a bit different, I had several presets that I could use to get the two cabs a little closer in the tonal spectrum (it would never be dead on, due to several factors, including speaker size, and the Berg being sealed vs the GK being ported).

    Hope that helps.
