Purchased by the original owner in '95 in Montreal, it was built by a guy named Mike Ostrzenski using pretty exotic woods:

    •Neck: wenge and purpleheart multi-laminate
    •Board: wenge
    •Body: walnut
    •Top: zebrano with ebony inlay

The "pickguard" is actually a disc of ebony inlaid flush into the top, pickups are Bartolini J-J with passive vol/vol/tone controls, bridge is a Schaller recessed into the top and scalloped at the tail end, tuners are Hipshot Ultralights, and the whole thing is satin finished in tung oil.

It has a very low action and plays incredibly well, in all honesty it's probably the best feeling/playing five string neck I've ever come across. The bass has a zero fret with a wenge string spacer, 34" scale, weighs 8.5lbs and is very well-balanced sitting or standing.

As you can tell from the pictures, some of the finish work is a bit rough around the edges. The neck is really a work of art, but the rest of the woodwork is NOT what you'd expect from a top-level custom builder. Thanks to the folks at La Lutherie MF who spent a lot of time on fretwork, setup, and finishing, it plays and sounds like a dream, but if you want perfection look elsewhere.

Priced at a very low $600 shipped, includes a Tolex hardshell case, Schaller strap locks, and custom suede strap.

I'm really only looking for a sale, but I'd be interested in a 3LeafAudio You're Doom pedal as a partial trade ;)

If you have any questions of course feel free to ask.

    Cheers!

I watched this one closely the last time it was on the market. It wasn't long ago. Beautiful instrument. It seems to be moving around a bit....

    PM's replied!

I'm actually only the second owner, and the original had it for nearly twenty years.

I just go through phases where I'll attempt to add a 5'er back to the stable, but I use a 4 string for all of my gigs and very rarely have a 5'er requested for session work.

It's too nice of a bass to just sit in my studio, and I'm sure it's exactly what someone else is looking for :bassist:

Sorry about the temporary absence folks! I hadn't read the thread bumping policy as carefully as I should have and was banned temporarily...my bad.

Regardless, the bass is still available at the moment so grab it while you can ;)

Any other instruments which you could compare the feel of neck and the tone to be in the same family as?

Also curious about the neck assembly. Looks like a very long pocket with just 4 screws midway into the pocket. Is it actually a set neck, plus screws? Or is there some type of dovetail to help reinforce the joint? Its a bit SD Curlee-ish

The tone is what you'd expect from the walnut/wenge/bartolini combo: killer finger style sounds with excellent punch and presence.

Based on what the original owner told me, the screws in the neck are actually ebony plugs/anchors for the pickup screws and have nothing to do with the neck construction itself.

I noticed in your profile that you use a lot of Spector basses, is the tone comparable to that?

Not really....Spector NS basses have a very signature sound, partly due to their construction, and partly due to their preamps/pickups...

If I were to compare this basses finger style tone to anything it would be Steffan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band) when he was playing Warwick Dolphins (wenge boards & bartolini pickups).

Is this closer to a WishBass or a CT as far as construction and finish?

    Thanks

    CT most definitely.

The neck is honestly amazing, both is terms of construction and playability, and the body itself is certainly well made too; it's really only some of the aesthetic finish work that you'll find wanting.
