Which is the best version of the 400RB and why? I just picked up a III for $129. I was looking for a I or ii, but couldn't pass it up. Looking at the features it seems really nice. I just hope it sounds like the old GK I had.

I think you will be pleased with the tone. The big differences between the II and III that interested me were the change from heat sink cooled to fan cooled output transistors, and the addition of a switch that opened up the bottom end for five string (low B) basses.

Given the choice of all the versions which would you go with?

As a four string player, the value of the 4/5 string switch was minimal. OTOH, I liked the idea of fan less cooling (quiet and reliable, but heavier), so chose the 400RB II.

The five switch is also probably of minimal value as I am using the amp primarily as the high in a bi-amp setup and as an amp I can throw in the car and go if I want to play somewhere. There are definitely some different voicing options on the III, just wasn't sure how it compare with the buttons on the II and I.
