    So I am looking for my first real bass head and cab combo and I stumbled along a nice 80's GK 800B. After some research on TB I have seen nothing but absolute praise for this amp. The years on it scare me a little though so I wanted to ask if it would be worth the risk to grab the "classic 800rb" for around $450 or go with a newer GK model (MB500 or 700rbII)?

    Also, I was looking to match it up with a SWR Goliath III, thoughts on that as well?

    Thanks! :hyper::help::hyper:

    I used an 800RB for about 15 years and it was a rock - reliable, consistent, and it sounds fantastic. This is one of the best workhorses around.

    If you don't like the miles on the one you found, order a new 800RB. You can't go wrong with this in any way.

    BTW - can't go wrong with a Goliath III either. I've got a Goliath II and a Goliath II Junior (210) and I love them!

    The 800RB is a fantastic head. Don't worry about the years/miles it's been through, they're built tougher than Bradley Assault Vehicles. $450 does seem a little high though.

    On the 800rb the 300 watts at 4 ohms plus 100 watts at 8 ohms rating is a lot louder than most current offerings with the same rating.

    Great sounding head, I still used one regularly and it will work well with the Goliath. They don't go as deep as the newer GK heads though, but thats part of the growl and the charm for me...

    They are great amps!

    I do think $450 is a little high, unless it's in mint condition

    Thanks a lot guys for the quick responses, where would I find a "new" 800rb and wouldn't that be more expensive? I know people on here usually find them for 200-300 but I'm honestly thinking because of them being discontinued and people wanting to hang onto them, pulling the trigger $450 wouldn't be too bad.

    Plus 1000 for a reliable head and cabs really is what I'm looking for

    Here is one for $299...horizontal switch (older) and rack ears (hard to find if they're the old style)

    The 800RB is in the rarefied company of the Ampeg SVT and B15N as one of the all-round best bass heads ever made.

    Buy it, or buy a new one, you won't be disappointed.

    For $450 I would get a 700rbII, the 800 is a great amp, but so is the 700rb.

    Yaaa...glad I grabbed the used version for $299 rather than selling my soul for a new one. Even though the way some people praise it on here, I think they just would haha :D:rolleyes:

    I praise them but I would never pay that much money for one, that's ridiculous.
