Im trying to find some music I hear in my head- no particular song, just the sound, and don't know of any artist that sound like it.

Im looking for hard rock sensibilities, but in a jazz/fusion infused way. Sonny Sharrock, but less jazzy. James Blood Ulmer, but less bluesy. Yes and Rush, but less nerdy. Somewhere in the middle there is a genre I am looking for... freeform, improvisational, distorted shredding?

    Screaming Headless Torsos?
    Music Revelation Ensemble?
    Ornette Coleman's Prime Time?
John Zorn's Naked City? Check out "Asylum" (it's under 3:00, IIRC).
...some Tribal Tech...some Aqaurium Rescue Unit.

Sharrock's Ask The Ages or Seize The Rainbow did not float your boat?
    ...or Blood Ulmer's Black Rock?

How about Miles' Agharta &/or Panagea with Pete Cosey?

    Tony Williams Liftime?
Then there's Aracana & The Last Wave (w/ Tony Williams/Derek Bailey/Bill Laswell)...not for the faint of heart.

Your description pretty well describes The Danglers:
    http://thedanglers.bandcamp.com/

Violin, Upright Bass and Drums (mainly that, some guitar and keyboard over the years too). Amplified and distorted as if in a hard rock / metal band. Plays stuff from Slayer to King Crimson to Coltrane.

Not all of their stuff is posted up on that page, but it's a lot of it. Look through the discography on the right side. Each song is unique, and the sound evolves over the years across the albums, so don't think that if you hear one song all the rest of the stuff sounds like that.

If you want to hear stuff that's more towards the freeform side of that group click on the album "Backpages". But there are certainly elements of all you asked for (freeform, improvisational, distorted shredding) throughout all the stuff.
